He brought up a slugger instead of a primarily singles hitter with men on base,
He’s trying to end the inning without giving up another run. Duplantis is probably a .600 hitter with the infield in in his career with the amount of ground balls he hits.

I get that it set up the double play, but if they cared about that there probably would have been a throw on Dups’ steal. They just let him go
No they didn’t. The catcher came up to throw but couldn’t get the ball out his glove.

It was the correct call, unfortunately. You have to try to set up the DP, and Twanie is a contact hitter that likely scores the run regardless of whether it goes for a hit or not.
And as far as not throwing on the steal, I thought that was more of a decision by the catcher bc Duplantis got that good of a jump. I seriously doubt the coach was just conceding 2nd base there

Right call 100/100 times

I doubt he was conscious of nor cared about dups record if he knew.

He probably knows now.
The baseball crowd at the Box was not as insightful as my brethren here on the Rant.

I didn’t think it was that great of a baseball move either
It's not a question of "that great of a move" in that situation. It was the only move in that situation. If you can't understand that then watching college or mlb must be very confusing for you

USM coach walking Dups - conflicted feelings
Why should our opponent's coach give a frick about LSU, Dups, or records? Jeez, some people.

Post 1, 3 and 4 on this thread are punch worthy. Get a freaking clue before posting about anything strategy related in baseball.

What is the HC's objective, aiding an opposing player to set a record, or win the ball game for his team.
IMO, Duplantis is the most dangerous hitter on the team. I would have walked him as well.

why should the coach of USM give a frick about Duplantis' pursuit of a record? His job is to put his team in the best position to win, not help an opposing player reach a record.

Anyone who thinks Berry took Duplantis's record into consideration at all is thinking with their emotions.

I love they “they weren’t setting up the DP because they let DP steal second” and then completely ignoring walking Cabrera to keep the DP in order.

But if they knew they weren’t going to throw if he stole, what’s the point of “setting up” the double play?
They also knew they'd walk Cabrera.
I don't think anyone cares if a player sets a school record against them. You are giving waaaaaay to much weight to this record. It's important for LSU and LSU fans. Nobody else cares.

USM coach couldn’t care less about an LSU record. He knows that going 2-0 is a huge advantage when trying to get out of a regional tournament and is trying to win. Nothing more to it than that.

Not the coaches responsibility
Posted on 6/2/19 at 11:41 am to ForeverEllisHugh
Not his job to please the opponents home crowd, provide opportunities for records or to be a set up man for the opposition.
It was the correct call

All I can tell you is I could see the USM’s coach reaction to the steal and they 100% let him steal. Like is said, if their plan all along was to let him steal and then walk Cabrera for the DP, fair play. But that is the only thing that makes sense.

Is this your first year watching baseball?
Serious question.

I don’t really see how any of their actions contradicted walking Duplantis. In each case they were more concerned with the runner on third.
Walk Duplantis to set up the double play, to avoid the run scoring.
Don’t throw at Duplantis, to avoid the run scoring.
Walk Cabrera to set up the double play, to avoid the run scoring.
It’s not complicated.

No it’s not a serious question. Unless you never come to the game threads?
My point is that there is no way they were ever gonna risk attempting to throw out Dups with Smith on 3rd. So their plan the whole time must have been to let him steal and then walk Cabrera.
