I'm sure there are hundreds, if not thousands of filmmakers and want to be filmmakers there that couldn't give less of a shite about some of the subject matter in their films. But clearly the videos are a good way to get millions to view your work.
USC is obviously trying to replicate LSU in this respect. But for as good as the videos were (and they were great), let's not forget that a BIG reason they were so popular is because the LSU football team was dominant; perhaps the biggest TV draw as the season went along; AND were led by a guy who was the runaway Heisman Trophy winner and clear future #1 pick in the draft.
You can make the greatest videos in the world. But if your team is largely irrelevant, no one will really care. That's not a knock on the kids' videos at all. It's just that the videos were so popular because LSU was so popular.

Give someone a few weeks of solid training, an elite tier video camera, and a good rig and software to edit on and lots and lots of people could do the same quality of videos.

I'm truly happy for the kid, and I know he will be great at whatever career he pursues ultimately because his talent is unmatched.
