Unpopular Opinion: In 5 years, LSU Basketball will have surpassed Football in popularity.
- The atmosphere of Death Valley has already been in a decline. People leave at halftime and the crowd noise isn’t nearly what it used to be. The program is still good, but is no longer seen as elite.

- Will Wade’s arrival has completely reinvigorated LSU Basketball. The atmosphere for the LSU-Vanderbilt game to clinch the SEC title was incredible, & Will Wade is building a winning culture that will assure that those crowds are the norm. Within 5 years, Wade will be competing for National Championships every season.

- The younger generation of fans have a shorter attention span, which is part of the reason that they leave the football games early. College Basketball is an action packed 2 hour game. College Football games drag on for 3.5-4 hours because of the commercials and long halftime. College Basketball games are also played in the comfort of air conditioning and has minimal traffic compared to football.

- Fans are getting fed up with seeing the same teams (Bama, Clemson, Ohio St, etc) competing for national championships in football every season.

TIA for the downvotes and name calling.

one of the sillier takes i've seen on here in awhile. Even when football was down and basketball was rocking and rolling, LSU was still a football school.

If will Wade is still here in 5 years the PMAC will be a way better home field advantage than Tiger Stadium

Nah.

One way or another, this football team will be back in the NC picture in 5 years.

That's debatable from 1989-1993.

Popular (and correct) opinion: You're wrong

ETA: You do realize we stormed the god damn field in football this year right? and the Bama game for the pregame and 1st quarter was probably one of the craziest atmospheres ever at LSU. Have you noticed how well the football recruiting is going? Football isn't going anywhere but up right now, my friend.

I'm a hoops fan as much as anyone, and that will never happen.

Even in the supposed pinnacle of LSU hoops popularity when Shaq was here and Curley was coach, I remember Shaq's sophomore hear LSU won a big road game in Tuscaloosa in January.

I tuned in to local sports radio eager to listen to some talk of LSU hoops and there were 20 calls talking about football recruiting and 2 about the game the previous night.

Not even close. Even with it being "off season" there is as much or more discussion regarding LSU football than the other sports combined.

I like all sports to be on top but football is king.

The atmosphere can improve now that we have a real AD.

I don’t care if the 2nd coming of Jordan signed here, football in Louisiana is always #1

-The atmosphere at almost every major football stadium in the US is in decline due to prime tailgating spots and the best seats being overtaken by corporations who are hit or miss in whether they will show, high food prices in stadium, and the fact that you can see the sweat beading from the QBs forehead from your living room for free.

-I think you're right about Wade.

-The shorter attention span has nothing to do with the "younger generations" and everything to do with the advent of social media. People over 50 are also dealing with this shorter attention span phenomenon. That being said, If basketball ever does overtake football as the nation's sport it will take a hell of a lot longer than 5 years.

-The college football dynasty has been in effect long before the current state of the sport. Princeton/Harvard/Yale in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Michigan/ND throughout the 20s, Minnesota in the 30s, OU/Ohio St in the 50s, Miami in the 80s, Nebraska in the 90s, etc. etc.

We finished 3rd in the SEC West and didn’t score against Alabama again. We’re soaring upward!!!

I doubt it, but football needs to work on much better scheduling, especially at home. It's a conference issue as well, permanent opponents, too many cupcakes, off campus OOC games, etc. With all the new coaches recently hired in SECBB things could get extremely competitive/exciting and who doesn't like watching action that doesn't take 3 hours to finish due to never ending repetitive commercials.

I think the powers that be realize Football will need to get a jump kick into the 21st century and upgrade concessions bathrooms and other aspects like streaming and phone reception to keep people coming out. Beer and wine is on the way so that should help some too. Should have been done 5 years ago IMO I’m mean we didn’t even have decent flat screens to watch the game while in line for the bathroom or food. These things have to be done or a family of 4 can/will decide to stay home and use their $400-500 on a 60in TV for the house instead. Football will never be 2nd at LSU.

I have been going to LSU football, basketball, and baseball games for decades. It is easy to go to an LSU MBB or baseball game. Attending fball has become a pain in the arse due to the huge number of people, on campus for those games and the tailgating.

LSU fans just want our teams to contend. If LSU were to be playing A&M on Nov 30, 2019 for the SECW title, it would be a wild atmosphere in TS.

Give us topnotch teams and LSU fans will be topnotch.

PS Will Wade is my favorite LSU HC on campus now. If he is at LSU 5 seasons from now, LSUMBB tickets will be harder to get than tickets to any olther LSU sport.

WTF are you talking about? No it hasn't. I lived through some of the most horrible years in the history of LSU football and the atmosphere didn't decline and this was when they were having losing seasons.

quote:

People leave at halftime and the crowd noise isn’t nearly what it used to be

People have been leaving at halftime for over 50 years. And the noise is still loud enough to cause other teams issues. Coaches mention this every season when asked about going into death Valley. People have always left early when LSU is beating the pants off the other team.

OMG man, these statements are just incorrect or misinterpreted situations. And no, basketball will never be more popular than football. Maybe as popular, but not more.

Alaflippingbama is the only one that has done this consistently over the last 10 years. Clemson has for 3 years. Ohio state hasn't in a few years. And LSU's program is getting closer to being elite again. Within the next 2 years O will have LSU competing for a NC. LSU has the number 2 or 3 rated recruiting class for 2020, and they are competing with the elite to do so. What do you think it will be like when they do compete for a NC?
