UNC-Greensboro on Friday @ 7:00 PM CST preview

So I thought I would give a quick breakdown of our opponent on Friday. For those that dont know, UNC-G was a very good team last year finishing 27-8, and lost in the first round of the NCAAT by just 4 points to Gonzaga. They returned the vast majority of that team this year.
Their first game was against North Carolina A&T, one of the better end HBCUs, and won a closer than expected contest 74-66. They were actually down 38-39 at halftime, but took control of the game about halfway through the 2nd half and maintained a 10-ish point lead rest of way. Greensboro no doubt is a SIGNFICANT step up from the SELA team we just played who lost most of their team who won 22 games last year.
Greensboro is led by senior shooting guard Francis Alonso who is a 3 point monster. He averaged 15.6 points a game last year taking 8 three pointers a game and hitting just over 40% of them.
Starting Lineup
PF (6'10, 200) JR. James Dickey
PF (6'8, 215) JR. Kyrin Galloway
SG (6'3, 195) JR. Malik Massey
SG (6'3 185) SR. Francis Alonso
PG (6'0, 187) SR. Demetrius Troy
Notables off the bench
G (6'0, 180) SO. Isaiah Miller
F (6'9, 250) JR. Eric Hamilton
G (6'4, 190) FR. Kaleb Hunter
A quick run down of those guys beyond Alonso:
-Galloway is a skilled 4 man with 3 point range and is a solid rebounder
- Dickey is the Bigby-Williams for UNCG playing protect the rim and rebound
- Troy is a pretty forgettable PG
- Massey is not someone to be concerned with at all
- Miller had a fantastic game off the bench their first game, scored a bunch, nothing from 3 point range though...he was very good last year, but being undersized at 6'0 without a 3 point shot could be tough against us
- Hunter made a name for himself in his first ever action scoring 11 points in 13 minutes
- Hamilton is a transfer from Wichita State who is mostly going to be forgettable but provides them with some size

IS Southeastern projected to be a competitive team in the Southland Conference this year?

They weren't before the great white hope burned his redshirt and was raining 3s on the Tigers.

They were picked to finish 2nd at Southland media day.
ETA: or whatever the basketball equivalent of media day is

Picked 2nd, but they looked pretty hapless to me beyond Mr. Parker coming in and draining a boatload of empty 3's.
I will say Veal, one of their top players, was not quite 100% last night.

I like the southeastern preview better. Who did that one?

SE LA has a few pieces to be good in the Southland. they were just a terrible matchup for LSU.
Greenwood has skill, but is undersized and got into quick foul trouble.
Thanks for the breakdown. This should be a competitive game. LSU definitely is looking to run and gun. There were a few times we lost rebounds because we were looking to go a little too fast.
I also think LSU will be a better 3pt shooting team than they showed last night.
Loved the energy that Williams and Taylor bring to this team. Williams is scrappy and skilled around the basket and both he and Taylor have freaking springs in their legs.

Last I looked, the line was only at 10.
Easy money.

I like your thinking pio, we could play sloppy though and this be fairly close, have to think we win by double digits though. UNC-G is a good solid team but didn't have the best showing their first game. Our bigs will actually be challenged this game though unlike against a very undersized SELA team.

My line has LSU winning by 18.
A stepup in competition but I don't think many people realize how good LSU is this year.

Wade will not let UNCG catch us off-guard. They're a known commodity now since they upset NC State last year and almost upset Gonzaga in the tournament.

LSU finally has the right coach and the right players at the same time.

i was most impressed with team defense. that takes good coaching and chemistry which means the stars are keeping their egos in check. wade has gotten them to buy in. also, the team was not hurting themselves with unforced errors. again, good coaching and individual bball iq.
another good sign, there's room to improve. they weren't perfect but they were darn good.

I look for Emmitt, Naz & Taylor to have a bigger impact tonight, WW sounds like he's been pointing to this game for a while.

From the CBS basketball guy I follow on Twitter:

Tonight's game for LSU against UNC Greensboro is the equivalent of the Tigers playing a 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Great early litmus test. Scheduling --- it matters.

ESPN.com says the game is on Southeastern Network but Spectrum shows that to be the KY game.
