Disclaimers:
This isn't about should we have lost to Troy. We should not have and the loss is inexcusable. This isn't about making the loss excusable. This isn't about being pro CEO or negative CEO.

That being said, I do believe that the disaster that it was brought the team together and they played very well the rest of the year. I still don't think they should've needed a wake up call so early in the season with a new head coach, but evidently they needed it. There was definitely a change in intensity and focus. They seemed to play angry after Troy.

I was pretty sure we wouldn't get bowl eligible after the Troy debacle and getting our arse handed to us at Miss St. Now we are on the cusp of 10 wins.

I wonder if we would've played so well the rest of the year if we beat Troy. I think we would've had a couple more losses. Auburn is one that sticks out.

Who knows. I don't think we'd beat Auburn and we were already lucky or fortunate to get by Florida.

Arkansas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Texas A&M were so bad towards the end of the year I don't think it would have mattered.

I honestly say true. If we beat Troy, we probably lose to Florida and Auburn.

False

I think The Troy game is completely overrated as a turning point in the season.

We went out the next week and barely beat a terrible Florida team, and looks like shite for a quarter against Auburn.

The real turning point was getting some DLmen back and Charles taking over LT.

People use Freshmen OL as an excuse but Charles improves the position when malone went down.

I generally hate these kind of arguments but I find it a bit more interesting when made with the caveats you provided. You're right, we absolutely should have beaten them and we shouldn't need a loss to a Sun Belt team to bring the team together. That said, those kinds of disasters often result in either total collapse or it can rally the troops in a sort of come to jesus moment. I don't think it's too ridiculous to conclude it was the latter in this instance.

You mean if O had never changed up the offense and the coaching rift hadn’t happened forcing an emergency meeting with the AD?

Pretty sure we’d be one game better.

Idk if you noticed but we beat Florida by 1 point on a missed Extra point

We didn’t go out there and turn it all around.

The defense got better because Rashard Lawrence and Ed Alexander came back.

The offense didn’t really start to click until the second quarter of the Auburn game.

People just want to spin that embarrassing loss as a positive. It’s not.

We already had an embarrassing loss, so why couldn’t that be a motivating factor?

We would have ended with a worse record if we went undefeated.

The same. We prob lose to Auburn under any reasonable hypothetical. Everything else would be the same.

I agree with you, actually. We ran Canada's offense in that game though. If we beat Troy, O probably has the huberress to think his way "worked" and we go into the swamp running whatever the frick we ran in the first half of Troy. We sure as shite don't score 17 in that game with the shite show of an offense that was Troy.

I think it was just a narrative that the players came up with to cope with such an embarrassing loss.

The loss to Troy was a major wakeup call for the team. I believe we would have lost another game we won, probably to an SEC team, because we thought we were invincible after righting the ship after the MSU loss.

Also, the number of "what if?" threads on the Rant is very annoying. Why don't we let the real future play out?
