Interesting. I’m guessing Mays is moved to the 2 spot? Maybe Will Wade guaranteed Waters a starting spot day one during his recruitment. I just don’t see Mays getting beat out unless Waters is the truth.

WW has talked before about how he likes playing 2 PG's at the same time

Heard he was awful against Tulane but fantastic against Texas. Would be great if the latter is more the reality of who he is. Can't wait to find out.

As a freshman, I'm going to bet that both of those the reality of who he is right now.

He's starting both PGs, he wants them both on the floor at the same time as much as possible. Creates more ball movement, and that's something we really struggled with under Johnny Jones in the half court.

Yep, talented freshmen will struggle at times and be dominant in others. He was probably the worst player on the floor against Tulane, but then dropped like 20 points against Texas.

CWW said the other day in a presser that when Mays is off the floor, the chemistry is way different. He's a big fan of Mays' IQ. So yeah he's probably moved to the 2.

Excited for this season.. some refreshing basketball will be played.

Just curious - did he name the starting lineup? There are a lot of possibilities.

Per Wade on OTB and Sports Today

1 - Waters
2 - Mays
3 - Still open, talked a lot about Sampson.
4 - Would be Epps if not injured. Simms was ahead, but the starting 4 spot will be reevaluated at practice today because Simms has not been consistent enough.
5 - Reath

These will be really interesting to monitor. Epps has this spot on lockdown once he's healthy, Combs will play a lot too, he's also not near 100% quite yet.

Sims' playing time will diminish a LOT if he cant start playing defense. Same with Sampson. Coach is not happy with either player's effort on the defensive end which is why it's a question if they will even start tomorrow.

I suspect he will be inconsistent as a Freshman (Wade has said as much). But when he's good, he's really good.

Mays is playing the backcourt with him. Wade has spoken glowingly about Mays and essentially said they are a different and worse team without him on the court. Very high praise from a coach who doesn't appear to toss out compliments lightly.

Waters, Mays and Reath are definitely in the line up. The 3 and 4 spots are up in the air, but don't be surprised to see Rachal. Wade really likes his defense. Sampson is the enigma. You can tell Wade really wants him in because he may be LSU's most talented wing, but it doesn't sound like he's bought in on the defensive side.

Thanks. One of the things I was wondering was whether Sampson was starting. It's frustrating if he just isn't putting in the effort to play defense. If that's truly the case, it's in his own best interest to become the best player he can for Wade.

I'll say this, Mays is the only player on last year's team that I thought brought consistent hard effort throughout the whole year. It was at times mis-directed but the effort was there for him more than anyone else IMHO.

Waters went 0-4 and played 13 minutes against Tulane. Interesting, because he stunk it up against The Green Wave.

Go and listen to Wade's interview on the podcast from Sports Today on 104.5 ESPN. He again emphasizes (as he has been doing) that Waters will be inconsistent at times due to his status as a freshman, but that his upside is worth the moments of errors. More importantly though, he talks about why he got limited time in the Tulane game and looked bad there for other reasons outside of being an inconsistent freshmen. Basically, they intentionally limited him because they wanted to see what other options were available behind him to assist Skylar with running the point. Also talked about how they were intentionally vanilla in their defensive schemes and offensive sets due to it being an open game.

He said that in their scrimmage against Texas, they played more like their true selves with respect to sets, defensive schemes and rotations due to the fact that he Shaka are friends and he knows that Shaka would keep the information under wraps. His perspective on defensive philosophy is really interesting and what they will be looking to do this year.

But he reportedly lit it up the next scrimmage vs. Texas.

Maybe WW is sick of Mays defensive effort?
