I find it interesting that both ESPN’s Fpi and Bill Connelly’s SP+ are high on LSU.

FPI (7)
SP+ (12)

Because it's just a matter of time before LSU is back to being a top 5 powerhouse again. One or two more recruiting classes and LSU will be right back where they previously were talent wise, and the coaching will be night and day better than it was under the two previous head coaches.

It's honestly impressive how bad LSU was in 2020 and 2021 when you look at the amount of talent LSU put into the NFL. Those coaching staffs were just completely fricking clueless.

I think Kelly was a brilliant hire, when you consider everything.

Sure, there's a possibility Napier will be good, maybe make a run in the East. Too early to tell. There's a possibility Lincoln Riley could have made us explosive. Or that Aranda could have built something.

But I think Kelly's floor is higher than any of them, and that's important right now. In a couple of years, we're going to see 2 new SEC schools- one with a ton of money and potential, the other with a ton of heritage that lives in the Top 10.
We need stability and structure, and the closest thing to a guarantee that we will be strong again, when those teams enter, and the SEC starts establishing a pecking order for who's good and who isn't.

Kelly may not be the best or most tantalizing potential hire, but I would wager he's going to have this program with 9 wins minimum, every season after this year. System will be more important than the random occasional talent that comes in a few years. You can't build a Joe Burrow offense and hope you get Burrow every season, it just doesn't work that way. But you CAN build strong fundamental schemes with upper-echelon athletes, and create a strong D and have plug-and-play RBs and linemen, and tweak things when you have a guy with a cannon or a slippery dual threat. Sometimes you may have neither, then the system is what brings you to those 9 wins.

Orgeron’s first total replacement coaching staff after the NC didn’t cared more about getting paid and what they had done in the past more than winning. The following year with his second total replacement, he brought in guys with no experience at all as coordinators. A terrible combo when you need to win now. Anyway I digress. We’ll be back in the rankings soon enough.
