Same reason Claiborne won the Thorpe as the best DB in college football that year, and Mathieu won the Bednarick as the best defensive player in college football. Mathieu lined up all over the field, so some found it difficult to peg him as playing any one position. Mathieu was, however, a consensus AA in 2011. Mathieu was only left off of the AFCA team. Dequan Menzie from Alabama was on there instead of him.

So Mathieu can't be an unanimous All-american, but still be an All-american because "it's hard to place" his position?

Claiborne was a wet glove on dudes the entire year. It’s disappointing that his pro career was a flash in the pan comparatively.

I'm just saying that's what people argued in 2011: "Was he a safety or was he a corner." He lined up at both and even linebacker at times. But lets get it straight. He was voted as an AA corner in 4 of the 5 selectors that determine whether you're considered a unanimous AA.

Yeah, expected more, but he dealt with a ton of injuries and IIRC was forced into being a zone corner when he was a pure man corner throughout college.

I will say this: TM7 made the team twice: as a DB and as an all-purpose Special Team (returner/punt blocker).

But still...

His suspension probably hurt him

I don’t know if you realize it, but there’s not just one guy making the decision. If there was, you’re reasoning would be overwhelming. All it takes is one voter thinking, “Mathieu is not good enough to be a unanimous AA, nor is he good enough to be an AA.” See? He ends up an AA but not unanimous, and no one is guilty of the hypocrisy you implied.

I say this all the time. TM7 was the greatest playmaker in the history of LSU but he was never the best pure cover corner on any team he played on at LSU. Patrick Peterson, Claiborne, heck I would say maybe Therald Simon were all better at that than him.

TM7 wasn’t a bad corner at all and as a pure playmaker no one is better than TM7. That dude just had a knack for making plays but a lot of his biggest plays we remember him for were not even playing as a corner. They were either in special teams or blitzing off the edge.

That was not the reason he wasn’t unanimous or the reason he didn’t win the Thorpe

It came out he was suspended for smoking that fake weed shite they called spice and it was a bit of a black eye.

Don’t get it twisted - While Tyrann had one of the best seasons for a defensive player ever - Mo Claiborne was a fricking monster that year.

Y’all should go back and watch his highlight film. Personally I had forgotten how good he was
