Time to move Hilliard up another day
Posted by Whataburger on 4/30/18 at 9:40 am279
It's crunch time, to say the least.
Not bashing Hess but his inability to chew up some innings is impacting games 2 & 3.
Last weekend for instance. Tie game in the 6th. What does Pawl do? Throw his best relievers and go for the win or throw Kudros/Petersen and hope for the best. In the back of his mind, he doesn't want to blow his bullpen in the first game.
This team is in danger of missing the tournament unless things change now.
Not bashing Pawl, he's working with what he's got. In fact I'm glad he got ejected on Sat. I'm sure he knew he would once he stepped out of the dugout.
We need more of that passion from everyone involved.

Hess just throws to many pitches.

Move Hilliard up and Labas on Saturdays. Hess to the pen.

#MeeToo, unfortunately.

I don’t know if this makes any sense but you could go Hilliard, Labas, then TBA In game 3. Depending on how games one and two go you could go with Gilbert or Bush in the third game or if a save situation did not show in the first two games you can start Hess. At this point in the season you may need to go a little outside the box to turn things around.

Agreed, like getting ejected. If only he'd have kicked some dirt while he was at it.

I think everyone agrees Hess’ ideal role would be coming out of the pen. I just don’t think you can do that this year. We are too thin for starters and he has the potential to get the job done most outings.
He can’t go to the pen becuSe there is no one to replace him. He can go out there and throw an absolute gem and he can throw well enough to get to the middle innings. Any early trouble destroys his pitch count which the biggest problem.

We don’t know that. Who would’ve thought that Hilliard would come in and do what he’s done. Pitchers have different mentalities when they are starting and have days to mentally prepare as opposed to being thrown out there in a 10 minutes notice. Don’t need a guy who throws 95. Someone like Hilliard who doesn’t overpower But locates his pitches well and changes speed to keep hitters offf balance. Hess needs to understand he has guys behind him to make plays and doesn’t need to strike out everyone. He’s done well in my opinion but like the OP stated, his inability to pitch into the 8 consistently is hurtng the pen.

I dont think you understand how rare it is to have a guy pitch into the 8th consistently is.
6 innings with 3 or fewer runs is a quality start. If your bullpen cant go 3 innings then you have a dogshit bullpen

I agree.
Also, Hilliard is doing so great on Saturdays that I would not want to mess with him.

At this point in the season does it really matter?
LSU is what they are at this point which is mediocre. They have to many holes in the lineup and not enough pitching to make a run in post season.
I am pulling for them just as much but my expectations for this year in post season is low.

I know we need him to be a starter but man I miss him as the closer.
I’m Secretly hoping we have 3 starters next year so he can go back to being our closer. Doubt that happens bc I know Hess wants to be a starter but one can dream right?

Hess is a draft eligible sophomore. Chances are, he won't be on the team next year.

amen
Hess is not a starter. He only throws 2 pitches. Once through the lineup he is great (if he is throwing stikes) but the second time around that fast ball gets turned around by good hitting teams.

How many pitches do you think Lange threw? Gausman? Plenty of Friday night starters in college only throw two pitches.

Actually, that's not what has happened at all. Hess has a 3.00 ERA in SEC games, which is 7th in the conference. Opponents in SEC play are hitting .206 on Hess, which is 3rd in the conference. He's 2nd in wins in SEC play.

It would be very helpful if our offense could put some pressure on the opposing starter. We haven't chased an SEC starter early in a game very many times this year.

Hess' style just lends its self to more strike outs. I don't think he goes out there with the idea of hey I am gonna go for 10 K's.

I posted this about two weeks ago. It was suggested to me by my niece’s husband who is a former LSU pitcher. He said that’s the strategy CPM used in 2009 when we won it all.
