The poison pill - 1/27/20 (Pelini hire)

Thats how i felt when it was confirmed that we were hiring Pelini.
To the lazy/poor thinker, the hire made good sense.
Pelini, after all, had lots of experience as HC and DC, and was the DC for the national championship in 2007.
However, an astute thinker knew something very salient.
SEC and CFB offenses, hence the entire game of CFB,changed in the general timeframe of 2013-2016, and even more between 2016-now.
So, the relevant point becomes, who could Coach O hire that had a proven track record as a DC in THE NEW ERA, vs the outdated/irrelevant old era?
By any reasonable measure, Bo Pelini lacked such a resume.
Did he have his share of successes in his career, yes.
But under no reasonable standard did any proof exist that Pelini was successful in the era that mattered - the modern pass happy era.
Maybe a game here or there, sure.
But there was no good evidence on 1/27/20, and there is less now on 10/11/20 - no good reason to believe he has the schemes and adjustment skills needed to succeed anywhere close to enough to win championships in the transformed CFB game.
Being positive, just for the sake of being positive, or stating your philosophy that "Coach O earned the right to pick who he wants" wont change anything.
Neither will a couple of good defensive surprise performances in 2020, should such a positive anomaly occur.
Pelini may be fiery. Pelini may work hard. Pelini may have a great resume. Pelini may be a good guy. Pelini may be Coach O's choice and good friend.
But Pelini is poison to the LSU football program.
He won't likely be dealt with till late in the season at best, or after the season.
But if we are lucky, Coach O will once again show that he can man up, and "Tell the truth" not only on Monday, but immediately and rightfully...
Cause "blocking out the noise" isnt gonna make this car fix its defensive brakes...all it will do is doom us all to delusion, and a lot of wrecks, as long as Pelini is the DC.
He's simply out of his league.
Its not about effort, nor resume, nor chemistry with Coach O.
Its about thinking, analysis and assessment.
Its about modern DC skills/abilities.
Hoping Coach O admits his mistake aa soon as possible.
Or we/LSU, and he as a HC, will be viewed as a 1-hit wonder, and/or Les Miles style of hard-headed.
Typing that gives me a head ache.
But it had to be said.
Cause its important to "Tell the Truth" vs double down on false hope without reason.
Pelini was a mistake.
He must geaux

Too long, lost interest. To summarize, Pelini is a dinosaur, and was the wrong hire.

The OP reads like you’re having a conversation with yourself where you ultimately wind up agreeing with you.
Are you okay?

Did you post this thesis at the time he was hired or is this a 20/20 hindsight narrative?

The problem is that we are seeing a pattern of bad hires at this point from O

1 in a row isn’t a pattern

Not that anything you are saying today is wrong, but you are being pretty full of yourself saying you felt Pelini was a poison pill on the day of the hire and using the phrase “to the lazy/poor thinker, the hire made good sense” when your own initial read was that you were cautiously hopeful on his ability to adapt to the game.
An astute thinker would have remembered this a little more vividly, as opposed to remembering to use words like salient.

Hindsight. See above.

Matt Canada, Pelini, Scott Linehan?
I don't think many would consider Steve Ensminger a home run OC either. I'll give him credit for Brady but I don't think that's a particularly good batting average for a coach that needs good coordinators more than most.

I’m not really prepared to say Linehan is a horrible hire yet
Brennen developed a LOT already in the past few games. There’s a question of play calling on 3rd downs and the goal line at the end....but that gets into who is really the OC? Linehan or SE?

Thanks for finding that post. I was trying to be hopeful to appease the rant, which was overwhelmingly in favor of the hire. My moment of hope was againsty instincts and judgment.
Behind the scenes of that hope was wrenching.
I wish that attempt at hope was incorrect. If you know how to read, you can see what i am saying. When i made that post, i had just returned from a long walk. I told myself i had no choice but to be hopeful, cause i am a big Tiger fan and a big Coach O fan. My assessment, vs hope, was that it was not a good hire. In trying to be a homer, i started several conditionals...hope, getting help to learn the new ways of DC'ing.
It was, admittedly, false hope, and thus far he failed in getting the help to asjust.
I hated the hire. I tried to look for the hopeful angle then, but my assessment was it was not gonna be good.

Saban coaches HIS defense at al. How many did ol ms put on them. Looks like the d around the league hasn't caught up with the O. All across the board !

Our defense was horrible down the stretch in 2007, it got ravaged by Kentucky and Arkansas. The game was already starting t to pass him by then, now it’s just sad.

BTW. Thanks for leaving this out of your commmentary
"Also, obviously, the offenses of the SEC are significantly different these days than what he faced as DC a decade+ ago. This will be his biggest adjustment."
He is failing to adjust

Our players look lost and uninspired. There's no intensity.

Kentucky caught up w MSU's offense in a hurry. We gave them a record game.
See the difference?

If you want to give him credit for Brady fine, but everyone else has been a huge misstep.

If I remember correctly, we were pretty banged up down the stretch. One of the most notable was Dorsey, who certainly wasn’t the same after that chop block from Auburn. They finally got healthy for the Ohio St game.
Unless I’m not remembering it so well...
