Was not aware, just saw it on twitter. Austin Deculus blocked it. Was wondering why he was super pumped after the miss. Makes sense now

blocked FG

It does skim his hand, but the more surprising thing is how was Baxa so highly regarded last year going 4/10 on FG’s??

Its high school. He could have been on a great team that didnt kick on many 4th downs because they would go for it, and the coach just let him try a bunch of long ones

Not all 4/10s are the same, especially in high school

He may have missed all 55+ yarders

Also, he may have had a long snapper and holder that were complete jackasses

Kickers are recruited by how they kick in the camps more than high school stats due to this

Yeah and?
He tips the bottom the ball which is a spinning spheroid. Take it off it's rotational axis like that causes more pressure on the top/right side of the ball forcing it left.

Yes, are you saying it should have been deflected right?

Any change in the gyration of a ball makes it do weird things (especially a football because it isn't a sphere). In this case, Austin barely nick it which must have put some left side spin on it

He certainly affected the path of the ball, though.

Appreciate the insight, I was wondering the same thing.

Could it also be that the kid has a cannon of a keg but poor mechanics and the Miami staff thinks if they fix his mechanics that he can be good?

I'm not going to say that the slight touch from his finger had zero affect on the path of the ball, but I think it had very minimal affect and I suspect that the kick was going to miss left anyway.

Only thing I could figure on Baxa's recruiting rank was leg strength. 4/10 for the year???

Looked to me like the first shanked punt was partially blocked as well.

Yep, that tip caused it to move left just like when the hacks on the OT put slice spin on a golf ball and it flies into the trees to the right. Now who knows if he would've missed it regardless, but Deculus definitely influenced where this kick ended up.
