In the last 40 years (post Cholly Mac) is either Bo Rein or Bill Arnsbarger. If we’re being real honest, nobody on this board was excited about the Nick Saban hire. The only thing we knew about him was that DiNardo had beat him in the independence bowl. None of us were excited about Miles and not many of us were excited about O.

My point is we don’t need to get too down if we don’t get our very first choice. Our last three coaches who all won national championships were not our first choice. With the wealth of recruiting talent we have around here if we get a good solid guy in place we can win championships.

We would have won multiple championships under Bo Rein.

He was Saban before Saban.

His Offense was ahead of its time and he demanded perfection.

Damn shame we didn't get to experience it.

With his innovative offense, I think he was Spurrier before Spurrier.

Bill Arnsbarger is probably the correct answer.

He was getting tons of credit as DC of the Miami Dolphins for the success the team was having in the NFL.

LSU's great, A.J. Duhe, was his star linebacker at Miami.

Was this board around then?

A lot of people were excited about Saban though. While he wasn't "Saban" then, he came in with high expectations.

I thought it was a good hire. He had the NFL looking at him while he was at Michigan State.

This board wasn’t around, but I can confirm that the Tiger’s Lair was not excited.

It was a great hire and most here thought so at the time.
He was the hottest young coach in the country and we paid him a lot by standards in those days.
Saban being a ho him hire is revisionism.

People actually were cautiously optimistic about Saban.

Commentators had been gushing about him for years due to his NFL experience.

We also made him either the 3rd or 4th highest paid coach after Mack Brown, Bobby Bowden, and maybe someone else.

It was a big investment/gamble for LSU at the time.

And considering how people pine for him now, it was kind of love hate thing while he was here. He lost to UAB in that first year. Loss less than 3 games exactly one time. And made some questionable personnel choices. Randall over Russell? Booty over Davey? But that fricker didn’t take no shite and was quick to remind the complainers that we basically weren’t shite before he got here.

Tragic that Bo Rein never coached a game.

Could have had a 20+ year run of excellence.

Believe he would have been that good.

anyone smart that I knew was thrilled and shocked about us getting Saban, who was already being floated for NFL jobs. He was already considered a defensive prodigy, attention to detail nut..

No disrespect to Bo Rein, but he only coached 4 years and went 27-18. Honest question, why does everyone say he would’ve been a multi-winning national championship coach?

Since we never seen Bo Rein coach here it's hard to imagine it. However as I remember Bill A was a big splash that fizzled out soon thou.

He was trained by the best and his Offense would have been unstoppable at LSU.

No nonsense guy would would have been an excellent recruiter at LSU. When he talked everyone listened.

This is legit, Bo Rein was the hot name splash hire of that time.

Not true, most ppl that followed football had at least heard of him and knew that he was very highly coveted by the NFL and had turned down NFL head jobs. We just didn't know how he would fit at LSU and the SEC.
