The Advocate - Will Wade on defense
quote:

After allowing 80 or more points twice in a 15-game stretch in which it went 13-2, LSU has given up that many in three of the past five games — and Missouri (78) and Kentucky (79) came close.

Four of those five most recent foes shot 40% or better from beyond the 3-point arc and Alabama wasn’t far off at 37.1%.

“We’ve got to just make drastic improvements there,” Wade said of his sluggish defense. “We’re going to change a little bit of what we do.

“Some of the defensive stuff, a lot of it is my fault. We try a bunch of different things to just see what sticks. We’ll try to get very good at one or two things defensively; if teams beat us on other stuff, they’re just going to have to beat us.”

quote:

the Tigers don’t have an identity on defense, he said.

Cutting down on the opponents’ 3-point shooting with better rotations and keeping them out of the paint would be a start.

“We’re going to work on those couple things to see if we can get better and solve a little bit of our defensive issues,” Wade said. “We just have to be 10 or 15% better, that’s four or five possessions a game.

I'm actually all for this. I thought the amount of different things we tried to do defensively became a little taxing.

One possession we would be in a 2-3, then the next we're in man, then the next we're in a full court press.

I trust in WW to get it done. Looking for a drastic improvement that fuels a deep postseason run, just like football

On a serious note, I like the idea of narrowing our focus on defense. Everyone likes to blame the 3pt defense (and it is a huge problem), but the real problem is that we weren’t stopping the easy buckets either.

My thought has been most of the season is that the defensive gameplan has been too overly-detailed at the expense of execution. You can see it over and over again after a defensive lapse. The coaches are yelling at the player who screwed up and, in return, the player is shouting back at the coach essentially saying he wasn't sure what he was supposed to do. Maybe simplifying things will allow them to be much better overall because...

quote:

“We just have to be 10 or 15% better, that’s four or five possessions a game.

He's 100% right. Despite playing horrible defense, LSU has still been within striking distance in every game they've lost (absent the ETSU game). Assuming they can keep up the same high level of efficiency on offense, we're talking about LSU only needing to get about 4-6 more defensive stops per game to turn those close losses into wins.

We can discuss the talent level. The lack of a PG. The absence of a "big man". But the reality is this team is still pretty good and not far away from being really good. That has been the most frustrating part. With even just a marginally better defensive output this team would likely be leading the SEC and a top 15 team. They are one of, if not arguably the most balanced offensive team in the nation. They have 5 starters averaging at least 12 points per game. NO ONE else can say that. FIVE guys that can get you a bucket any time one-on-one. They are a nightmare to defend because you can't double team anyone. Now just imagine if they could hold teams to just 8 less points per game.

That doesn't make any sense at all. Wade contradicted himself in two sentences.

This has been my point even when I've been on my soapbox about the lack of effort vs Vandy, Mizzou and Bama. As bad as we've played, we've still been right there at the end. The conference championship is all but not going to happen, but IF these improvements do happen we can go on a nice little run heading into tournament time.

Drastic improvements don’t need you mean to necessarily change things. It means you need to get better. Maybe this is just more practice, idk.

Acknowledging the need for drastic IMPROVEMENTS =/= We're going to change a little bit of what WE DO.

From that take it seems plausible, and not contradictory, that Will Wade believes "changing a little bit of what we do" will help "make drastic improvements".

One more time, acknowledging that we need to improve defense drastically does not contradict the idea of needing some small tweaks to do so.

It could be worded better, but it makes sense. He’s going to make small changes that will hopefully lead to drastic improvements.

Lost in all this is the fact he was handcuffed in recruiting last year.
We missed out on some good recruits that could be the difference in winning/losing those close games this year.
When he gets the guys he wants the next few years LSU won’t be losing those close games.

happy now?? Time for everyone to back off and let the man coach his team. He is working with a small rotation of players. He said he’s tried a bunch of things on defense and nothing is sticking. What more do you want. It is what it is.

He has two resources at his disposal:

John Brady - his teams had no offense, but they could play defense.

Dale Brown - bring back the triangle and two or diamond defense or whatever it was he would use occasionally that would really stymie opponents.

I'm glad he actually took responsibility for the defense Thursday. Wednesday night, he did not do that.

I can call him out on not being accountable on Wednesday night, and I can also acknowledge and appreciate his acceptability of accountability on Thursday. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Of course, I completely agree. However, some were acting as if he never takes any responsibility.
