It was hard to get too excited about Thaddeus Moss going into the season. He was hurt all last year. He’s a bit undersized for a tight end. And despite promises year in and year out, LSU has never known how to use a tight end.

Moss has 32 receptions through ten games. Moreau had 22 all of last year. With at least three games left, Moss should double what Moreau did.

You can see a lot of Sean Payton in Brady. Moss literally lines up everywhere. Sometimes he is next to the tackle, sometimes he is wide, sometimes he is an hback in the backfield. He seems like a tweener for the NFL, in between a wide out and tight end. He doesn’t really stand out much out in the field, but he gets it done. He is a good route runner, has good hands and is a serviceable blocker.

I think the way Brady uses Moss is why we got Gilbert. Gilbert is a true tight end. He is going to create huge mismatches for the secondary. I have no doubt Brady and Ensminger sold him on the different ways we will use him.

Gilbert coming out of high school is to tight ends what Julio Jones was to wide outs. As good as Moss has been, Gilbert can be a game changer, an NFL looming tight end. No one thought Gilbert was coming to LSU. Muchos props to Brady, Ensminger and Moss. You can tell recruits you plan to use the tight end, but showing them you know how to use the tight end is way better. Gilbert is no tweener. Like Devin White and Julio Jones, he is one of the rare recruits you get that is physically able to go straight from high school to the NFL.

The 2020 class has several true difference makers. Gilbert is the one that jumps out at me as an instant contributor.

He definitely has all the tools to make a huge difference in this offense and take pressure off of Chase and Marshall next year

Lol. No worries. The rant is not a place for anyone worried about downvotes anyway. Learned that the hard way.

Uhm...Moss outweighs Moreau.

Yeah, Thad is 6’4 and about 240lbs. He is a big boy that can block and catch. I am assuming he is coming back??? I do like your points. The Saints used Jimmy Graham as a potent part of their offense and I see Gilbert being used like Jimmy.

And.... Don’t forget about Kole Taylor! Another giant that can line up anywhere and cause severe mismatches - he lines up wide a lot and can run after the catch. Imagine Kole and Gilbert in a red zone package on the field together.

Good post. I like Moss and certainly wasn’t trying to diss him by saying he is undersized for a tight end.

I mean that by NFL standards. And I know some places list him as 6’ 4”. But I doubt it. He looks 6’2, 6’3 at best to me.

But he is a solid player and I am sure will get a shot in the NFL. Gilbert is more prototypical, a lot closer to Graham and Gronk in size. At least to me he looks bigger.

If Gilbert’s skillset translates, I think he could be a 60 to 75 catch guy by his Sophomore year. He can be just as good as 84 for Florida

what amazes me about Gilbert and Kole is their ability to run after the catch! They are not lanky and awkward, they are slippery, fast and have moves. Fun going through the 2020 class and watching film, if we land Burch, I am thinking we will surpass Clemson and have the Number 1 class

I'd add he's pretty good after the catch as well

I'd say exceptional route-runner, A+ hands, and I've seen Moss destroy some LBs on key blocks. I think Moss is one of the most under-rated TEs in college football.

Apart from our difference of opinion on Moss, great write-up, and I look forward to watching Gilbert.

*Did you miss the toe-tapper Moss made against Bama? A lot of all-pro NFL WRs would have that on their highlight reel.
