Spring Game: Hot Takes

A lot of people are going to disagree, but it is what it is.
Jay Ward: Ward is a very solid SEC player, but he doesn’t look any better than last season. He is not a game changer and this secondary lacks/needs a true baller back there. Maybe Brooks or Bernard-Converse can be that in the fall.
Sage Ryan: I won’t say he is a bust because that’s absurd. He has a long way to go though. He is definitely not your plug and play 5 star talent that we all thought he was. Let’s see how much progress he makes by game 1. He doesn’t have to be a starter this year, but we badly need him to develop by 2023.
Zavier Carter: Carter looks like our most consistent edge rusher and May end up better than Ojulari THIS year
Kolbe Fields: young player with speed, but if he allows runs his way like he did today he won’t be seeing much playing time this year. If he does we are in BIG trouble.
Tre Bradford: Bradford can be a game changing back on offense if utilized correctly. Reminds me of a poor man’s Percy Harvin.
Peyton Todd and Ezekeal Mata: If both of these players continue to progress we should have improved punting and continue having a great kicking game. Mata just probably can’t hit the long ones like York could and that’s fine.
Offensive Line: with the additions of Cambell, Frazier, and Shorts our offensive line can go from mediocre to tops in the SEC by mid season.
Frazier and Shorts are very solid and will only get better.
Campbell will be our best offensive lineman since Whitworth. Future NFL star. He man handled several great edge guys on multiple plays.
QBs: Nussmeier looked the most consistent and made the most accurate passes of the day. If he continues to progress he will be the answer if the coaches are looking for someone with a great arm and running ability.
Daniels made some good throws and good runs. What most people don’t realize is QBs weren’t allowed to be tackled so defenders weren’t keyed in on QBs to run. If this would have been a live game Daniels would have been focused on more and wouldn’t have scrambled as well as he did. He has potential. He is also very inaccurate at times.
Brennan made some good throws. I feel like the passing game wasn’t as open with Brennan in as it was for Nussmeier. This is probably because they were testing Nussmeier’s decision making skills more so than Brennan. Brennan’s plays were super vanilla like WR screens, inside runs, etc. I honestly think the coaches know they have a solid arm with Brennan and wanted to see how he handled the little things. If not he wasn’t given the same opportunity to showcase his arm.
Howard has all of the tools. He has a talented arm and is mobile. He showed maturity when he scrambled by continuing to keep his eyes down field like really good QBs do. He was very inaccurate throughout the whole game. He made a few nice throws and actually reads the field very well, he just isn’t there with the timing yet. I don’t see him on the field more than a few plays this year unless two guys transfer out.
Offense: it’s tough to say how good this group will be without a QB taking the job and knowing just what kind of offense we will run. Boutte is a game changer and Emery could be. Right now we have no identity.
Defense: we badly need a solid lock down #1 corner. Maybe Bernard-Converse or Banks can be that. I’m hoping both will come in and take the 1 and 2 spots and run away with it or else this will be the least talented secondary LSU has had pre Saban. Luckily with solid coaching the secondary should still be solid. One or two major injuries there and we will be having Pelini flashbacks. Same with LB corps. Defensive line is going to terrorize opposing teams.

Daniels had 4 drops that I recorded on my sheet
He would've been 7/9 with 2 tds and over 100 yards if they weren't dropped

This. No reason not to let him sling it today if you believe in him.

Waiting on the amount of upvotes/downvotes before reading this long arse post

B Thomas Jr also made a circus catch to pad his stats some so it evened out. Also consider Daniels had in 1s most game and some 2s while the other guys had walk ons at WR at times

Seems you got most of it right sir.

I kinda think the coaches like Jayden a bunch
Even without the thomas catch he should've been 6/9
So we'll see
Hope this sheds light on those who say he was purely inaccurate today though.
7/9 of his balls were catchable, and the 2 he missed on were overthrows
Still a ton of time left in this race (Brennan Fan)

The part of summary that stood out the most was regarding our secondary. My gut tells me it could be anywhere from 4th-12th in SEC and will be the biggest impact to W/L on the season.

Nuss is in better game shape still than Brennan. Both mentally and physically, You can obviously see he is processing information faster. That may improve for Myles. Or it may not. But Nuss is the most game ready right now.

I feel the same way. All depending on how good Banks, Bernard-Converse, and Brooks can be. They are such an unknown right now. Also I just don’t see a safety that sticks out. Maybe Burns will come back healthy and bulk up some.

I want to see how it looks with Banks and Converse in

Nuss is definitely seeing the field better than any QB right now. He processes things very quickly. I think last year he was too quick to trust his processing skills and just fired them off. Nuss is very much in this race. I didn’t believe the hype until I watched the game today.

Mata and Todd won’t see the field this year

Who do you have as starting P and K?

And Daniels had a lot of trouble with the quick throws. But did seem to improve as he settled in. I still don’t feel like we’ve seen his full potential, if he can get a little more consistent, his potential is scary. I really like our QBs

I re watched the spring game and he should've been 7/9
The receivers dropped 4 of his passes

Jay Bramblett and Nathan Dibert

Totally forgot about Bramblett! Punting depth will be in better position than it’s been in years
I don’t know much about Dibert. How much better than Mata do you think he is?

Brennan is the guy but I was surprised at how much better Nuss looked compared to last year.
Brennan starts this year, and then Nuss vs. Howard for 2023 is going to be insane.
