He also stated that if it were his kid, relative or friend and they asked his advice "unless their position is RB" and they are an underclassmen, if they are NOT projected to go in the top 2 rounds he would do everything in his power to convince them to play out their eligibility. He did say there are exceptions to the rule and that is a generalization but it applies to 90% of the early entrants. He also stated that sports agents are absolutely killing some of these kids futures "and he did put blame on scouts also."

This has always been true, always. But the kids always think they are the exception not the rule.
The difference between the first and second round is what about 2-3 million, and the first and second round probably more than that. So if you can move up you are getting paid 2 or 3 million to play your final year or two of eligibility.

Plus if you are first or second round pic, you are almost guaranteed to be around for 3 or 4 years as they will not want to cut you as they will have to be admitted they screwed up. (Mark Ingram)

All this shite and stupidity is totally driven by the agents who care as much about these kids as alligators do about beavers. nothing but a meal ticket. When we kill the NCAA and go to super conference, ban agents from campus and briong back athletic dorms, this will slow down

you are under the assumption that you get better development in college than the NFL

You have to be on the team (or at least the practice squad) to receive that development. If you leave school before you're ready, don't show enough in training camp and then get cut, you'd have been better off in college.

the 2nd contract is where a lot of players will be making significant $ now. Coming out a year earlier gets you 1 year closer to that

This is the flaw in the OPs argument. Getting to that 2nd contract one year earlier, if the player ends up being successful, will more than make up for anything he "lost" on the first contract by leaving early.

I have no doubt that Simon and Minter could have increased their draft status, but ultimately it is all about getting to that second contract now. Minter was a 4 year junior and he was not going to get better. I think he could have increased his draft status by just being too productive for too long to have any doubts about.

For most of these guys you have to make the money while you can. Same reason a lot of high school baseball players skip college to go straight into the pros. With football you have to go to college, put the required years in, then get to what was your objective from the get go.

for some of these kids..there is no time (in their mind) to wait..I am sure the agents want the money now as well.

some do not realize of the impact, even on the first contract, that one more year of experience may have.

Great post, thanks for the insight. I really hope Freak and Ego decide to stay, but from past interviews it sounds like they are gone.

Freak and Ego would be 2 of the most unproductive underclassmen that LSU has ever had go pro...ridiculous.
