Trust me, Cliff Harris is a lot faster than 4.8. Just watch him play.

I would, but he won't be playing.

I would not put a lot of stock in those numbers. I bet it is the difference between hand timed 40s on a track and electronically timed 40s on a football field. LaMichael James ran a 4.59 in their winter conditioning drills (the fastest on the team). He runs around a 10.6 100m in real track events. Those two numbers do not equate, he is much faster than his 40 time shows. The same is probably true for the rest of the team vis-a-vis the 40 times from winter workouts.
This is one of the most level headed posts I have seen from a poster on here. Guys, you really believe that Harris runs a 4.79? Believe me, I have been following oregon football for years and our boys run really slow times in winter conditioning (they do an electronic time every winter). They then go to combine and do very well.
Players don't train for a 40 and then when they go to combine, they train for it. I have literally seen guys shave .4 seconds off their time.
Dior Mathis ran a 4.74 but has a 4.31 listed on scout. Don't put ANY stock and these time. I think Patterson would have the second best time and he ran like 4.2 somthing in high school.
I think it just matters in how they compare amongst themselves.

Watch this video, then come back and tell me the guy is slow.

I just looked up some previous winter conditioning times.
Patrick Chung ran the same exact 4.79 in winter conditioning and posted a 4.49 electronic time at the combine.
So, Harris and Chung ran the same exact 40 time.
I wouldn't call Harris elite as far as straight line speed goes. Obviously he is fast but not the 4.2 or 4.3 variety. He is elite at closing speed. Short quick bursts of speed are what make him dangerous.
As an FYI, Mathis and Patterson have elite speed and they aren't sniffing he 2 deep right now.
Maehl ran a 4.62 at combine but was very productive because he set a combine record in the 3 cone drill.
There is a lot of stock in that 40 time. Sometimes too much.

The guy is obviously faster than 4.8; Oregon looked pretty damn fast LY. I'm not convinced that we're faster.

He is very fast. Don't believe that 40!

3-4 guys already said we didn't, spare us the indignation.

.4's a bit much. do Oregon guys run their winter conditioning 40s while carrying a midget?

I still think he's slow.
Man, if team speed is based on how fast you run the plays, it'll be the fastest team vs the slowest in the nation.

I love your over confidence....there is a very slim possibility that Oregon might actually show up to play a game...or should we just give you the W and stay home.....or maybe you should just play your 2s and 3s and save your starters for a real game.....these Oregon pansies are just going to lay down and watch you guys play ball in total awe of such magnificent beasts......

I am... especially on defense. We may very well have the fastest defense in all of college football, which is one reason I believe we match up well with Oregon. Who has faster DEs and DBs? Add to that we have fast LBers and DTs and we often run a 4-2-5 so we max out speed on defense on most downs. This is gonna be a fun season with our defense creating alot of negative plays and turnovers

Both teams will be extremely fast. I am sure that LSU has one of the fast defenses in the country.

In high school I was the fastest player on the team in 10 or 20 yard sprints. I was at top speed almost instantly. However, my short little legs didn't give me great top end speed and all the backs would pass me and win a longer sprint by a large margin.
So there are two types of speed. Lineman (me) don't usually have the higher end speed but may be quick in the short burst. Some players have both kinds of speed. That sort of explains why some with seemingly slow 40 times are actually very fast in short distance football situations.

The whole fricking league is like an NFL minor league.
I would like to see a matchup of the best SEC team and the worst NFL team.

I agree. I have quit trying to defend Oregon on this site. We only have a couple months left. We'll just have to wait and see.
You do realize this is an LSU board right? What the frick did you expect to find here?

I never said an SEC team could beat an NFL team. However, the caliber of athletes in the front 7s of the SEC is just ridiculous. That's what's separates us from the rest of the conferences.
