Special teams: why not go for the block?

We always peel back for the return; unless you have a guy like PP7/TM7 it’s almost always a fair catch, minimal return, muff, or penalty.
A blocked punt is such a huge momentum play that it seems like a better risk/reward. Worst case you rough the punter.

Or you over commit to the block and thereby make yourself out manned on a fake…pick your poison

Because a roughing the kicker penalty is an absolute momentum killer.

If you go for the blocked punt, you run the risk of a running into/roughing the punter penalty and giving the punting team a 1st down. Usually a team is happy enough that their defense just stopped the other team and they're getting the ball back that they don't want to risk it.

When you have Joe Burrow you just want the ball. With Joe gone we have to be better on STs, and blocks and returns are all back on the table.

If you can gain 10 yards it make one less first down to the endZone or red zone that is a huge thing. Also it seems like blocks often come from picking a good spot and find a breakdown in the protection.

When you have a lousy offense you should go for the block now and then. With LSU’s 2019 offense you should fair catch almost every punt.

Maybe because we had the best offense in the nation and history of college football....id rather play it safe and just put the ball in there hands and let them go down and score

you go for the block when the opponent is punting from midfield or in your territory because there's no chance for a return. you go for the return when they are punting from their territory as you need the blockers to escort your return man.

1) Forcing the punt is already a win.
2) Susceptible to fake punts. Especially if opposing teams were to know that you always go for the block.
3) Risk a roughing the kicker penalty, which is a personal foul, and will give the other team a first down even if it's 4th-and-25. That kind of change in fortune can be an absolute morale-killer.
4) If the punter has a decent release time, it's nearly impossible to block (or very risky because players have to lay out and risk the roughing the kicker penalty). Coaches have to find weaknesses in the blocking scheme and exploit them. You can't just go for the block every time and expect that you're going to block a certain % of punts. It doesn't work that way.

This has been a sore spot for years with me. With the punt return talent we have had, the punt returners NEVER have ANY room, or blocks in front of them. Isn't here a coach or scheme available that can get this corrected? This has been a short fall of our teams for a number of years.

Virginia Tech used to have a reputation for practicing punt block formations and executed this a lot back in the 2000s. But “a lot” means like 1 every other year.
Now you see teams scouting tendencies like this to design fakes. Georgia nearly pulled off a fake field goal in 2018 if not for Delpit’s instincts sniffing it out.
We pulled the Brad Wing fake punt against Florida in 2011 by scouting their punt safe release and having Wing just wait slightly before realizing everyone on Florida’s punt coverage released.

Virginia tech blocked 8 punts in 1998

I mean we blocked one and scored this year on one for the first time in forever. I think we went for the block a lot this season. It’s a hard thing to do.

Other than stupid personal foul penalties, roughing the punter is the worst and dumbest penalty you can commit. It is the same thing as a turnover. The other team is GIVING you the football back. Don’t do anything to screw that up. Possession of the football is too valuable.

The obvious and very simple answer is that the risk outweighs the reward.

The best part of that was that the fake happened on a re-punt because of an illegal formation penalty, where Florida had peeled back exactly the same way. In both cases, Florida set up for a left side return, with the players on their right peeling back and leaving nobody outside the hash. The first time, LSU downed the ball inside the 10, so Florida had to make us punt again. But, they changed nothing, so we took advantage of it.
OBTW, LSU got the ball on a failed Florida punt.
The sequence starts at 34:56.
GEAUX TIGERS.

LSU most likely would have played Ohio State in the championship game because of the roughing call.

We did block a punt for a TD this year though which is something I hadn’t seen LSU do in a long arse time. The Saints are unreal at blocking punts though, I think we’ve had like 6 or 7 in the last three years alone.

Nothing chaps my arse quite like getting a roughing the punter penalty and an automatic first down
Blocked punts are pretty hard to come by I have no problem with playing it safe and trying to get a return
