Our return game is down right pathetic for the talent we have. We are almost the wort P5 return team in the country.

Punt return
Ranked #100 with 86 yards

Kick Return
Ranked #112 with 271 yards

Can we at least put our fastest guy returning kicks and pray he hits a hole? The pros do it. Holliday made a living doing that.

Cole Tracey leads the conference in scoring and last I checked he’s on special teams.

Please stop. 8-2! No one thought the team would be 8-2 at this point. Special teams have been a huge piece of those 8 wins. Sure, the punt returns are low but how many muffs have there been...zero.

I am not saying this IS what is happening, but my guess is that they probably aren't spending a lot of time on the return game right now and trying to divert as much as they can to other areas.

If fair catching punts and kickoffs gives us 45 more minutes to work on the offense, then I'm all for it.

Just a hunch, but highly probable.

No 1/2 of our STs have been good - punting and FG kicking. That is VERY VERY Short lived. Like 3 more games. So get ready for more of the same old shite next season from all phases.

Giles is bad at returning punts. He can barely catch them.

Special Teams has been good, especially Tracy and kick/punt coverage. I agree that they need to put somebody else back to field punts besides Captain Fair Catch. Giles will fair catch a ball when nobody is within 20yds of him.

Special teams is multifaceted and you manage to only pick out the two weak parts of it.

Overal, special teams is a huge step up this year from last year.

Hell it is responsible for at least one, if not, two wins.
Go back and look at the field position game vs Miami.
Remember Auburn and Cole Tracy’s last second kick to win?

There are things to bitch about with this coaching staff but special teams isn’t one of them.

Kickoff are almost completely dead

Total kickoff yards are not a great way of measuring ST.

Giles is such a head scratcher back there.

He’s not fast

He’s not sure handed

He’s not smart in his fair catch decisions.

The ONLY bad part of our special teams is the returns.

Everything else has been amazingly good.

Member when we couldn’t kick it out of or even into the end zone?

While I agree that returns are a problem, the rest of the Special Team units are outstanding.

ESPN has LSU as #9 in the country in special teams efficiency.

I was completely on board with the frustration over our kickoffs under Miles. Always wanted Gamble to just kick it out of the end zone. So I’ve been pleased with the new kickoff strategy.

That said, I’d be interested to see numbers on our opponents average starting field position after kickoffs this year vs under the old strategy of angled kickoffs.

I mean, I know we had some penalties for kickoffs that went OOB, but I also know we had plenty of kicks that were downed before the 25, which is where almost every kickof possession has started for our opponents this season.

I’d be very curious to see how many yards we’ve gained to see the actual benefit.

Hopefully one of you younguns who has nothing but time will run those numbers for an old arse career family man like myself

And totally agree on the return game. Absolute non factor at best and liability at times.

Punts about the same.

FGs have been great. Tracy FTW

Field goal kicking and kickoffs have been outstanding. Punt and kick off returns have been atrocious!!

That's about the dumbest way to rank kick returns. LSU has only returned 12 kicks, which is 118th. They're averaging 22.6 ypr, which is 38th and only 7.2 ypr less than the leader in that category. Based on average if LSU had the same number of returns as South Florida (leader in total yards), they would rank #1.

Dumb for the same reason. A valid criticism would be that LSU ranks 72nd in ypr and is 14 ypr off the leader in that category.

Giles has to be the worst punter returner in the country. LSU has several better options than him right now on their team but Coach O is pulling a Les Miles by continuing to go with Giles.
