We all know how good Cole Tracy has been.

He's currently the leading scorer on the team with 32 points through three games. 8-8 on extra points and 8-9 on field goals. His longest field goal was 54 yards, and his only miss was at a distance of 53 yards.

Punting has been pretty good as well. Zach Von Rosenberg has punted 13 times for an average of 47.5 yards and a long of 59 yards, with 7 punts ending up inside of the 20.

Avery Atkins has kicked off the ball 18 times, 15 of which have been touchbacks. A huge improvement over recent years. And 0 have been out of bounds!

We haven't been lighting the world up on punt and kick returns, but Giles and Edwards-Helaire have been doing a respectable job on each, with average returns of 15.3 and 19 yards, respectively.

Overall, our special teams have been lights out this year, which will help us out in big games like we saw last week.

I never fully appreciated a routine kickoff for a touchback/no return until the last few seasons. So refreshing to see it booted out the back of the endzone.

Don’t take anything away from Atkins. He’s god a fricking leg. You’re making it sound like booming them out of bounds is such a matter of fact thing to do.

Only read title but yes ST’s has done a 180. Imo we are possibly an 11 win team last season with the ST production like this year. That’s solid any year bad loss or not

and something else I noticed

On the one kick last Saturday in which Atkins didn't get a TB he was the one that made the possible TD saving tackle

ST have been money. Greg McMahon may have sucked in the NFL, but he’s doing well here. That fake would have been perfect if either ZVR didn’t jump or Moreau didn’t get held up.

ZVR probably would have gotten the first if he just ran for it. Would have been close

Honestly, the ST are by far, the best O > Miles argument that can be had.

Miles had let our special teams devolve into a complete circus. It was like he didn't even care.

Growden is a really good pooch punter too. Probably not worth the scholarship but he has a role at least.

Also Giles looks surehanded fielding punts. Not as explosive as other guys they’ve had but solid.

Growden was intended to be the next brad wing, but I don’t think he has the leg for it. Dude shanked tons of punts before he got benched for ZVR

Moreau was open because of the fake run, and the jump is to get the pass of the defenders.

There are reasons certain plays work certain ways.

Yeah, Growden isn't a terrible punter. He's alright at pooch punts, but he does have a tendency to shank a few.

At the very last we have a back up punter with some experience if needed.

a look around the college football world shows how important special teams are. TCU could've beaten Ohio State with better special teams. missed field goals AND they couldn't kick off past the 15. the first 2 went out of bounds and gave the ball to Ohio State on the 35. punting sucked as well. what the hell is Patterson thinking?

Wisconsin - lost their chance at a playoff spot with a loss to Akron because their kicker couldn't make a field goal.

you've got to have special teams. give O credit - he knew it and went and got some kickers. and a coach.

Ed Orgeron didn't have a st coach and it was complete garbage last year. That's on Ed. So far he's had zero complete seasons of steller St play compared to Les' 10.

I'm all for giving Ed praise for fixing something he created. But let's stop lying.

This right here is huge and under appreciated in my opinion. In year's past, especially in the late Miles' years it seemed we could almost never get it in the endzone. It was extremely frustrating to see time after time the coverage team get pressured to tackle the runner without giving up a big play or getting injured. Getting it in the endzone consistently is better than the lower percent chance of pinning them inside the 20.

are you saying Les had 10 stellar st seasons? That would be the dumbest thing ever posted in this universe. Les had maybe 2 stellar st seasons

Anything less than 25 means that we should just take the touchback.
