Sonny Shipp: Things I want to see on Saturday (spring game)

With new coordinators in town, installation has been a major focus on both sides of the ball, especially for defensive coordinator Daronte Jones. The Tigers return nine starters from last year's unit that allowed 492 yards and 34.9 points a game.
New offensive coordinator Jake Peetz installed some new concepts, but a lot of the offense is familiar to the players since they played under Steve Ensminger last season and Joe Brady the previous year. Peetz returns all 11 starters that finished the 2020 campaign, giving the Tigers one of the more experienced teams in the country.
Fans should expect a vanilla game plan in all aspects on Saturday, but there are still a lot of things we can take away from the action.

I just want to see great fundamentals and execution. No sloppy play. Offense getting in and out the huddle. Good communication and no injuries and I would call that a success

Good linebacker and safety play.
Our biggest weaknesses last year and unknown this year.
I have strong faith the Offense and rest of the Defense will figure it out and be good to go week one.
ETA: I’ll predict the LBer core gets back to the LSU standard this year with JUCO transfer Strong leading the way.
Not sure about Safety.

As always, no injuries is what I want out of Saturday.

Aside from no injuries, the only thing I'm interested in seeing are individual plays. The only thing the spring game is good for relative to fans is the foundation for gross overreaction. If the offense hits some big plays 1/2 of the fanbase will say it is because the offense is great. The other 1/2 will say it is because the defense sucks again. If there are a bunch of "sacks" some will tell you it is because the DL is great. Others will say "Oh God. Our OL sucks again". It is a game were a 25 yard pass completion can be BOTH a great and terrible play depending upon your point of view.
The game is virtually a no win situation when it comes to the fans because LSU is competing against themselves. So you have to look at individual aspects more than the team aspects.
Can the QB's make plays if/when everything isn't clean in the pocket? Are WRs making contested catches against good coverage? Are there guys who are tackling well? Are there players with make-you-miss ability despite the defense being in good position for a tackle?

Things I want to see:
-team in shape
-fundamentals
-receivers and backs CATCHING the damn ball
-communication on the backend of our defense
-o line as a whole including backups

Offense hasn’t huddled up in 2 seasons. Do you mean lined up quickly, and checked in to the best play based on what the D is doing?

So what does he want to see?

I think I heard it said that they won't be running blitzes. So if there are sacks it means our offensive line is getting beat in 1v1 situations.

Masson smith's calves.

Hope we can at least see some nice catches made by a few of the wide receivers other than Buotte.

Why would you bring his work to this board? If he wanted it over here, HE would have posted it.

Got my season tickets. Pretty excited for next season regardless of the spring game but you have to think the offense will look good with no blitzing, Ricks out, and Stingley likely not playing much.

I just want to see players on the field. They could be doing rhythmic gymnastics for all I care

It's fake. They can't be hit. Spring game is a farce. There is nothing to see except individual athleticism.

I want to really watch the qb mechanics and footwork. I feel bad that only one guy can get the QB1 job. All four of them are class acts and extremely talented.
OK.

1. OL protection
2. Emery and/or Price stepping up and actually giving us a running game
3. Have LB/S positions step up
4. Have someone other than Boutte step up at receiver
Those are some of my biggest concerns entering this year.
