Skylar Mays, a junior guard for the LSU basketball team, was named Monday a first-team Division I Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

quote:

Mays is averaging in double figures on the court while maintaining a 4.01 GPA in pre-med/kinesiology.

Also Monday, Mays was named as LSU's representative on the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team.

On the court, Mays has averaged 13.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals a game in starting all 31 games.

Story from The Advocate

It's easy to lose sight of the great things these kids do on and off the court with so many other things going on around the program. What an incredible young man and a great representative of LSU. He's going to be one of my favorite Tigers for a long, long time.

This is awesome.
The dude is awesome.
He is a leader, steadying figure on the team, calm and collected, and clutch.

To spend the amount of time working out, practising, and making a 4.0 in pre-med is unreal. I don't see how he does it.
Congrats Skylar. You are a great Tiger and great representative of LSU

Plus the community service. That's what really got my attention in the article. I probably should have put that in bold. How does someone find time to help others like that when they have so much going on themselves? Especially at his age.

Not to mention losing one of his best friends way too early.

Pretty impressive.

Maintaining a 4.0+ GPA in pre-med and being a major contributor/starter for a top-10 basketball program is VERY impressive if you ask me.

Bumping this to make sure as many people as possible get to see it. This is an amazing accomplishment by one of our Tigers.

My son is such a nerd he didn’t realize he had a physics lab with Skylar till we were watching a game together over Mardi Gras break. Not a big sports fan.
Extremely proud of him though.

And amongst all the time and effort he’s spent on schooling, playing, and doing community work, he still finds time to visit Wayde’s gravesite as often as he can.

He said he went to Wayde’s grave on Saturday morning “and talked to him” before the game.

Why isn’t there more media attention on him?.
It makes a wonderful story, if Yahoo Sports and ESPN care to take a few minutes away from the sensational and negative press given to LSU.

Love you Sky.

Someone always has to be a jackass. The fact that this kid has time to workout, practice, study, 4 point plus grade point average AND fits in enough community service to get recognized for it is mind blowing. He's one of the more impressive young men that I can recall wearing the purple and gold and IMO it should be celebrated by all. This is the kind of kid that anyone and everyone should support.

Couldn't agree more. I wonder what we can do to try to make this happen. I don't do all of the social media, but I would be more than happy to email anyone to get them to talk about this on air.
