SEC storied...
Posted by ApexTiger on 1/1/22 at 10:35 am216
Covering the great voices of college football in the SEC...
Did we replace Jim Hawthorne with the right guy?
Does he have the passion? Winning people over?
The voice of sports commentary is and always be an important piece of the college fan experience...
Thoughts?

My favorite: there’s a ground ball foul down the third base line and the count is FAIR BALL FAIR BALL TIGERS WIN!

I doubt you ever listened to John. Jim was absolutely fantastic in the 80’s and 90’s. Calling some great basketball and baseball games.

SEC storied Show
Really didn't Mention Much about LSU Play callers .. Maybe Three 2 second clips .. 1 or 2 Really Play Calls ...
The show should have been called "Highlights & Stories From Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Auburn Radio Booth"
Really Shafted the rest of the Schools ...
LSU Football was a Monster on the Air waves in the 50's , 60's and 70's on WWL Radio out of New Orleans at Night.. You could Make a Whole SEC Storied about that.... But the SEC Office is in Birmingham isn't it ...

I think time has been very kind to John Ferguson's legacy. I loved the guy - great voice for radio and back when I started paying attention to LSU he was the voice of my childhood and you might get one game a year on t.v. so unless I went (my Dad would take me to 2 home games a year) I was listening on the radio.
I can tell you his verbal gaffes were at least as frequent as Jim's if not more and every bit a amusing. My brother and I still recount some of them to this day.
He spent one year as the Saints play-by-play guy I think in the early 90's and it was absolutely brutal to listen to unfortunately and sad for me to hear.
Not saying this to demean him, if you're on the air long enough there will be verbal gaffes and many stay in the game a bit too long maybe.
My point is that those that belittle Hawthorne in comparison to Ferguson because of the issues with getting names, phrases or depth perception have convenient memories as John had as many or more.

Spot on.

I think most only tuned into Jim's broadcasts to search for faults to post on tRant.

Great memories listening as a kid to LSU football games on the radio. Ferguson may have had some gaffes but he sure knew how to create the mood. Such a great voice. I especially enjoyed it when he was battling with the roar of fans on a Saturday night.

Hawthorn was garbage. Created something called the intercomplete pass. We were the only college that executed that play
