Ell actually gets it!

I think we can assume a guy hitting .240, or .241, or .249 with decent defense will suffice. It doesn't have to be exactly .250 to qualify as decent.
quote:Wait, who said we had shitty catching? Milazzo is a great catcher.
Auburn and Mizzou were the only other teams in the league with shitty catching like we had. Everyone else seemed to have decent play from the C position.

In 10 games against SEC teams, he hit .344 in 32 AB with 2 HR
Small sample size but it shows he’s not just a big fish in a small pond.
Also, his numbers later in the season are significantly better than earlier. He got super fricking hot at the end.
Edit: miscounted AB. Tiger Ree did a better job in his thread.

No. Milazzo is a great defensive catcher. There's this other part of the game that you have to do as well, and hitting .135 is beyond shitty.

haha ok. Maybe we have different opinions of decent. When i say decent, i dont mean should be hitting in the top 5 of the lineup. There's nothing wrong with having a .250 hitter batting 7/8/9.
I'm not asking for us to have a league leading catcher every year. but on down years, asking for .250ish and decent defense shouldn't be some crazy expectation from a catcher at LSU.

Bro. Do you know how hard it is to find that? MLB scouts are going hut by hut in the Dominican Republic throwing balls at toddler nuts saying “stop this ball, we can teach you to bat later”.

quote:Exactly. We are talking about having BOTH. Only Mizzou has neither. 7 other schools only have one or the other.

I simply explained how we "missed" on an elite defensive catcher who hit 0.400+ at a 5A local high school. It happens, projections aren't easy and they're sometimes wrong or something else happens (injuries, bad student, bad teammate, etc).

quote:Do you? I've explained why it's hard to project. I've explained that players who would be excellent at the position and hit very well avoid catching. Why is that so hard for you to understand?

Wtf is everyone arguing about? We’ve basically got 2 catchers as of now. One is great defensively but not good at the plate. The other is really good at the plate and not the best defensively. Hopefully one of them can improve enough within the next 7 months to be a serviceable everyday catcher. Idk why some of y’all are counting out Milazzo. We’ve got a whole new coaching staff coming in, including a head coach that specializes in hitting. Are you not expecting improvement in a guy who just got done playing his first full season of college baseball?

you are trying to say that Millazo hitting .135 is on par with other teams catchers hitting .240.
Quit it.
.135 is beyond pathetic. 11 schools had someone who wasn't anywhere near as pathetic as that, not 7.

I quit addressing anything to you about this back around when the statistics were posted.
We’re proud of you. You’re the smartest baseball person in this thread. We have your wisdom on record. We’re all better for having read this 4th time related masterpiece of catching insight. Thank you.

Basically that LSU fans are spoiled because they always have great 2 way catchers, but we should be satisfied with just having the SEC median cause that’s how everyone else gets by

I am, somewhat, but he kind of is what he is at this point. He hasn't hit over .200 in either season at LSU. I think he could get it over .200 next season possibly, but not much higher than that. He had 43 ABs last year and hit .183.
His career stats are:
.148 BA, .253 OBP, .460 OPS, 25 hits/55 SOs, 13 RBIs and 1 HR. In 169 ABs. That is historically bad and consistently bad.
If McManus can improve his fielding a bit, which I think is more "doable", I think you take a .330 guy that is decent defensively over a .210 guy that is elite defensively. But I'm not the coach for a reason, I trust Jay.

Lol any of year he wouldn’t even be asked to return to lsu coming off the season he just had. The catcher recruiting has stunk, though.
He should be able to roll out of bed & improve on a .135 average. Doesn’t mean he should even get that opportunity at a place like LSU.

Jordan Romero is one of my favorites. We had a fricking catcher that couldn't throw the ball back to the pitcher...at LSU.
Posted on 7/8/21 at 11:21 am to DRock88
He also wasn't allowed to play if the wind was blowing in.
