People are overlooking Murph for the "new toys" in Ridley and Ford. Murphy is a good back.

They'll all split time until they fumble, though. Then they'll sit for a while.
I dont think its people overlooking Murph as much as it is that he'll start the first game, get a few carries and he'll be hurt for the season...AGAIN

ETA: I hope this DOESN'T happen...

I got really excited about Murph this year when I found this little tidbit on an article I saw yesterday about Locke from Kentucky

quote:

Locke averaged 4.7 yards per carry last year en route to rushing for 905 yards and six touchdowns.

Those stats were amassed coming off of a torn ACL and MCL in 2008. With even more time removed from that severe injury, Locke should post even better numbers in 2010.

Locke also averaged 27.8 yards on kick returns, in addition to collecting 31 receptions last season.

He has it in him to do big things and I hope he gets at least 650 all purpose.

He hasn't impressed up to this point and the superstition surrounding the wearing of number 18 means nothing to me. The guy is also coming off a knee injury. So I am reserved in my enthusiasm for Murphy. I don't quite understand the hype.

I'm thinking if Murphy is the starting tail back and gets most of the carries that is because of senior bias. Murphy just never really impressed me as a tailback. He has good elusiveness and quickness and thats about it. He's not big or powerful and he doesn't have good speed either, even though there is a misconception sometimes among the fanbase that he's a "speed back". If you watch his runs you'll notice that he really doesn't have the speed to pull away from a defense.

Nothing surprising, I have no problem with seniority in the beginning of the season, but I still think we will see Ridley come in to start a few later this season as he develops into an even more dangerous runner. Both backs are gonna be awesome to watch if our line can provide a gap to run through,

He looked pretty good when he has touched the ball. Just one example but did you see the play he hurt his knee on last year. It was special. He has moves speed and vision.

Murphy starts = senior bias
Ridley starts = Miles big back bias
Ware starts = Recruiting promise

Ford is the only legitimate starter!

Who has impressed? Ridley, who has 272 career rushing yards (4.78 yd/carry avg). Murphy, who has 442 rushing (5.5 yd/carry avg). Ford, who has 0 career rushing yards. I don't think anyone has the job locked up based on past impressions.

This number has nothing to do with superstition. Maybe you should go back and read why a player is given the #18 jersey before you run your mouth and degrade it.

I like Murphy too, but he isn't an every down type back who can carry the running game

How do you figure that? He's never even been given a chance to be an every down back.

He does not have speed. He does not have break away speed to run away from a defense. In 2006 and 2007 Keiland Williams was our fastest back before Miles and the staff bulked him up. Just because a guy is smaller than the other running backs doesn't mean he is automatically faster than them. The only time Murphy runs away from a defense is when the defense is made up of walk-ons in a spring game. I thought Hester's speed and Scott-pre 2008's speed were also not far behind Murphy's speed if at all.

Enlighten me. I'm not trying to degrade it. Hester is one of my favorite LSU players of all time. But is has absolutely no bearing on how well Murphy will do this year or whether he is deserving of the number 1 slot in the RB rotation.

Put me in the Ford camp.

He runs with patience, right into the mass of bodies, and slips right out. He's a positive yards back with enough speed and power.

I think Murphy gets the start because he's the leader. This doesn't mean he isn't also starting because he's proven himself to be the best at camp. Instead, what I'm saying is whether he earns it during camp or not, he'll be the starter.

Having said that, whether he remains the starter, depends on how well he performs. Also, regardless of who gets the start, I believe the carries will be pretty evenly split between Murphy, Ridley, and Ford. I'd say each gets between 7 and 15 carries per game. The remaining few carries will be by RS either as a back or in the Wild Tiger.

While I hope they all do well, I'm scared that none will be dominant because they won't be allowed to develop a rhythm.

Folks forget that Murph is a very good back.
I'll be surprised if he doesn't lead in all purpose yardage by the end of the season.
