With Danny "Vanilla Vick" Etling making headlines yet again, I thought it'd be appropriate to take a trip down memory lane to a time before LSU fans were spoiled by a generational QB from Ohio. It wasn't an other worldly performance, but for the first time in years, minus Fournette sending opponents to the shadow realm, LSU's offense was somewhat exciting to watch again.

LSU vs Jacksonville State

LSU was coming off a Week 1 upset loss to Wisconsin, the first opening loss since 2002 against Virginia Tech. After going 12-21 for 131 yards 1/2 TD/INT in the loss, starting quarterback Brandon Harris was already on thin ice. Then head coach Les Miles had already stated Brandon would have a chance to keep his job but was on a short leash. Surprisingly, after Harris went 1-4 in the first two LSU drives, Les would actually keep his word and send in Danny Etling to lead LSU's offense.

The LSU faithful rose in cheers as Etling took to the field.

Danny Etling's first play of the game, and at LSU, was a wheel route to TE Colin Jeter. He drops it right into his hands. Jeter unable to keep it, incomplete.

Next play is a handoff to Darrel Williams for 5 yards.

3rd and 5 from their 35, LSU runs a 3 WR set. Etling dumps it to Williams for the 1st down, LSU's first of the game.

Etling's next throw is a perfect strike to Malachai Dupre that gets dropped. LSU's sideline is not pleased, Danny just claps it off.

2nd & 10 from their 42, Et-sling manages to hit Williams and get 12 yards on a screen. First down Tigers.

1st & 10, first play in Jacksonville State territory, Danny "Michael Jordan" Etling fakes the handoff and instead hits another TE, DeSean Smith, for a 46 yard TD.

The extra point was blocked, because why the frick wouldn't it be.

Danny Etling would finish the night 6-14, 100 yards, 1/1 TD/INT, and 1 rushing TD in LSU's 34-13 victory. Again, nothing to write home about, especially when you consider Jacksonville's Eli Jenkins went 17-35, 248 yards, 1/1 TD/INT. However, by having a QB that could make their reads and get the ball into receiver's hands, Danny made LSU football enjoyable again.

And single-handedly extended Les's career at LSU by 3 games.

Etling singlehandedly made 2019 possible by playing well enough in 2017 after the Troy loss to help O keep his job. Without that, Joe don’t come and probably winds up at A&M or something.

If DeSean could’ve been around when we changed our offense and Jacorey Washington….. they deserved better.

Funny enough, he was less than a second from extending Miles job in that Auburn game.

I think Miles gets similar results that season, beating Mizzou, Ole Miss, aTm, and losing to Bama and maybe Florida.

Then we would be in the same dance at the end of the season.

I think Danny was hurt and couldn't go.

Hell, if Brandon just runs the ball or throws it away on the Int at the end of the game, we get a shot at a
FG for the win.

But hey, all of it ultimately led to 2019. So I'm ok with it. At least that's what I tell myself, ha.

Etling was a tough SOB. Loved watching him play for us.

Dude was a fricking warrior, took a Helmet to the face against Auburn and said IDGAF

I'm pretty sure there's a gif of him with his eyes bleeding but I couldn't find it

I don't think I'd ever seen this game before, but Dupre has a drop here LINK during the Etling drive and my immediate thought was he'd dropped the same pass for a big play from Harris against Wisconsin. And then the announcers say that he had drop issues too.

Brandon got a lot flack (deservedly) for the Wisconsin game, but he put a few in Dupre's hands that couldn't have been thrown better. Kinda sad when you're struggling and one of your big play guys isn't helping the cause.

At this point i was laughing my arse off. what a great flashback to the comical experience LSU football had fallen to at the twilight of miles' tenure. great post.

Danny Etling was the definition of mediocre. Taking Mettenberger, Lee, and Jefferson all before him

Random thought rewatching some of that game, I just remembered that Donte Jackson scored 3 TDs in his career and all 3 were called back by someone committing a dumbass penalty. Poor guy.

Look at the stats. The NFL agrees 0/0 with 0 yards and 0 TD

Etling was more than serviceable. Maybe not an elite national title type QB but better than Harris, Jennings, Lee, Jefferson, Andrew Hatch and probably more that Les Miles subjected us to

Give me Danny's LSU mediocrity (not the Purdue stuff) at QB from 2010-12 and we got 1-2 more NCs.
