Stole this from another thread (great find anc). It boils down to this: LSU's defense was "weak" to the open field. Basically, we didn't shift to defend the extra space and State took advantage. All we had to do was move a man over to the open side and bring someone down on the short-side. That's it. Instead, State goes heavy to the open side, we stay in a balanced look, they run-pass option and it looks like State is 6 on 4...because they kind of are.

quote:

For example: as MSU moved up and down the field, they also moved side-to-side, and as they did so, they knew where they could exploit LSU’s defense. As Fitzgerald explained after the game, they knew that whatever hashmark they were closest to, the open field side was where the Tigers were weak. Constantly, MSU rolled that direction on designed runs, quarterback rollouts and run-pass options all night.

“We knew they were going to be weak to the field,” Fitzgerald said. “We knew we could attack that part of the field for them. We always had two people in front of me blocking. Had great blocks. Make sure people on the perimeter are blocking, too. Really, all I do is run.”

Yet all the players claim we knew exactly what they were going to run and they did.

So the question is why didn't we adjust to even the odds?

Not really. Etling is not a good all around QB but he had some pretty big drops and IMO is more accurate than Fitz.

I don't think Fitzeral is an all star passer but he certainly isn't horrible. I am sure he will also continue to progress as the season does. Mullen continuously develops his qbs

It makes zero sense. It would seem like a staff with a D-line head coach, a "genius" DC & a former DC would be able to figure it out. Unless there is something going on behind the scenes.

Tebow had a 170.8 Qb rating, 1 Heismann Trophy, and 2 National Championships. I assume you are trying to compliment him.

What does this have to do with the defensive line? Shouldnt the LBs have shifted?

I said this in the first quarter. They're moving side to side and exploiting holes in our defense and keeping us off balance. I could see what they were doing. Back and forth, side to side, spreading out the field, picking out the holes. They were using the whole field. I thought Aranda would figure this out. We never did.

On offense, we did the opposite. We were all bunched up, we ran into a crowd up the middle, and then we went vertical in the passing game. Much easier to defend.

On the wide side if the LB's shift but the line doesn't you are conceding the edge & at least 4 yrd right off the bat. The spread is built for numbers advantages on the edges. State knew how LSU would line up and knew they wouldn't adjust.

This is the problem right here. Most here and in this town are so hung up on how many players lsu puts into the NFL while limping to 8/9 win seasons the last 4/5 years. Who gives a shite. Win games. That's all that matters.
