Watching that nightmare OL performance Saturday night was rough. TJ was bad but a true freshman QB certainly wasn't getting any favors from a OL that can't pass block or run block. So is it a talent problem, development problem or both?

2020 class

OT Marcus Dumervil 4 star .9515
OG Marlon Martinez 3 star .8895
OG Xavier Hill 3 star .8796
OC Liam Shanahan 3 star .8600

Too early to tell with the freshman but Shanahan starting is an indictment on previous classes

2019

OG Kardell Thomas 4 star .9572
OT Ray Parker 4 star .9341
OG Anthony Bradford 4 star .9179
OG Thomas Perry 3 star .8850
OC Charles Turner 3 star .8763

Kardell is trending towards being a bust, Parker was moved to defense and is currently suspended indefinitely, Bradford is another one not cracking the rotation in a bad O line, Turner was the backup C last year that forced us to go out and get Shanahan

2018

OT Badara Traore 4 star .9020
OT Cam Wire 3 star .8851
OC Cole Smith 3 star .8844
OG Damien Lewis 3 star .8656

Traore registered a handful of starts and significant snaps as a backup before going undrafted. Wire is splitting starts at LT with Rosenthal. Cole Smith transferred to Mississippi State. Lewis was a multi year starter and drafted in the 3rd round.

2017

OT Austin Deculus 4 star .9772
OG Ed Ingram 4 star .9217
OG Saahdiq Charles 4 star. 9038
OT Seth Stewart 3 star .8539

Deculus multi year starter but not projected as an early round draft pick. Ingram starter at G but missed 2019 to suspension. Charles started 28 games over 3 years, 4th round picks in 2020. Stewart signed but never made it to campus.

2016

OG Donavaughn Campbell 4 star .9374
OT Willie Allen 4 star .9248
OT Jakori Savage 3 star .8400

Campbell grad transferred after playing in 7 games. Willie Allen transferred out after a redshirt year. Savage hung around 4 years, got moved to defense but didn't play much.

20 players signed
.9024 average 247 rating (4 star)
6 starters
3 draft picks (2 thirds and 1 fourth)

5 stars 0
4 stars 10
3 stars 10

Comparatively

Bama

5 stars 3
4 stars 15
3 stars 4

UGA

5 stars 5
4 stars 11
3 stars 6

All the success of Bama begins with the O line

A protected QB can easily appear to be a tier above his actual skill set

A RB who can run downhill through massive gaps and blocking schemes can easily appear to be a tier above his actual skill set

It is not rocket science. It isn’t a sexy investment but it is necessary and smart to invest in your O line.

Furthermore, elite Qb's and Rb's want to go to schools with elite OL's. You can be certain that Offensive Cordinator and OL would be the two things I look for in a school if I was a top tier QB.

As great as our current recruiting class is it's mind boggling how we still only have one OL committed when that's arguably our biggest position of need.

Its also important to note, not all 4 stars are created equal. LSU only had 3 of those 4 stars at a 95 or higher rating during that period while many of Bama and UGA's 4 stars are 96 and 97s..borderline 5 stars. So they're definitely pulling a higher quality recruit even outside of the 5 stars.

Bradford and Thomas aren’t busts unless they don’t start or contribute next year. Don’t underestimate Thomas getting hurt and then not having a real off-season after it. Missing an entire on-campus spring and having a severely restricted fall will hurt the O Line guys more than most groups.

Turner was always a project. Hines slid over and took a lot of the backup snaps at C last year, but his shotgun snaps were arse. Again, if he isn’t ready to play next year, then he may be a bust.

The numbers are a big problem. Cregg seems to have had a positive impact on a few guys, but overall development is pretty inconsistent across the roster and years.

I question the coaching bc it seems we have had plenty of talent to be better than what we have had. Last year JB made them look much better than what they probably were

I agree, but part of that is trying to close two big fish. You can see by the other offers they have made that there will be more than the one. They can’t afford to have fewer than 4 unless they have a lead on someone in the portal with 3 years left and a waiver lined up.

FYI, Alabama’s current recruiting class consist of
#1 5 star OT
#3 5 star OT
#2 4 star OG
#1 4 star OC

LSU
#13 4 star OT

Possible landing Tristan Leigh
#4 5 star OT

I would include Rosenthal and Hines in the 2018 class. The intent was for them to be OL not DTs, the same way Parker was a TE that was supposed to be an OT.

That being said we aren't recruiting close to where we need to be on the OL.

That's troubling. Why have we had so much difficulty signing highly rated offensive linemen?

Do these classes cover every offensive lineman we currently have on the roster? Good list!

It's not a numbers problem, LSU has 13 scholarship OL that I count. The problem is, OL take a long time to develop unless you are getting those top 100 caliber players. LSU lost Charles and Cushenberry to the draft early, missed on Van Pran at center, and only have Deculus/Kardell as those top 100 players. Dumervil was right outside the top 100 so you can include him as well but LSU is getting crushed in OL recruiting by Bama and Georgia.

And that's not to say that Charles and Cushenberry didn't make the right decision, I mean Charles was a 3 year starter at LT but he had eligibility and would have been nice to have him back. Cushenberry was a fourth year Jr. and is starting for the Broncos so can't fault him too much.

How many are currently in the 2021 class?

Can anybody point to Orgerons crowning jewel on either side of the line of scrimmage up front? We haven’t had a single dominant player recruited under Orgeron out of our big personnel. There’s no Booger no La’el Collins no Dorsey, even Cush and Lawrence were Miles signees.

This has become a common trope this year, but I don’t think it’s 100% accurate. Go back and watch how much we struggled to run the ball consistently early in the season and also vs Auburn last year. That wasn’t the case at all down the stretch. We ran at will, especially late in games, vs very good Bama, Georgia and Clemson defenses. There was significant improvement over the course of the season, and there was a noticeable difference when Charles was playing. If it was just the other guys hiding deficiencies, they wouldn’t have struggled as much as they did at times.

I agree that adjustments were made and having a generational QB and a great RB helped a lot, but the line was also a lot better than this year’s when at full strength. The award they got was over the top, but it also wasn’t just smoke and mirrors. Cush and Charles made a massive difference.

Just 1. Garrett Dellinger who would be our highest rated lineman since Deculus. We're also in on 5 star OT Tristan Leigh. Clearly not enough to address the need.

There’s a good argument to make on the O Line, but he’s actually done a pretty good job shoring up the defensive front in last year and this year’s classes. Gaye, Roy, Ojulari, Guillory and Webb is a pretty damn good stockpile of young talent.

Pretty good isn’t dominant.
