Points allowed against each opponent compared to their average scoring against other teams

Texas A&M scored 20 and they averaged 33.1 against everyone else (-13.1) L
Vanderbilt 7 and 15.8 (-8.8) W
Florida 34 and 42.4 (-8.4) W

Arkansas 24 and 25.9 (-1.9) W
S. Carolina 24 and 23.4 (+0.6) W
Alabama 55 and 49.2 (+5.8) L
Ole Miss 48 and 39.8 (+8.2) W

Misssouri 45 and 24.7 (+20.3) L
Auburn 48 and 23.2 (+24.8) L
Miss. St. 44 and 18.1 (+25.9) L

Sort of obvious stats, but they show that if you hold a team near or below their average scoring you can win the game.

Relative to the opponents' normal scoring, there were three good defensive games, four okay games, and three terrible games.

This also shows how the A&M game was so frustrating as it was a loss where it could have been a win with more offense.

The Ole Miss game was a shootout and the pick-6 and other turnovers really helped with the win even though they scored well above their average.

That's pretty subjective don't you think?

Here are some things to think about.

LSU vs Ole Miss

Defense gave up 558 yards and 48pts while generating 6 TO....

LSU vs UF

Defense gave up 609 yards and 34pts while generating 3 TO...

LSU vs Ala

Defense gave up 650 yards and 55pts while generating 1 TO...

LSU D ranks 126th in Passing D
LSU D ranks 97th in scoring D
LSU D ranks 124th in Total D
LSU D ranks 116th in long scrimmage plays.

Imagine the yards and points if LSU didn’t get TO in final two games.

Just for reference of the first game...bc a team should improve

LSU vs MSU

Defense gave up 632 yards and 44 points while generating 4 TO

Great info.

I came into this thread thinking this was going to be about another argument one way or another regarding Pelini.

However, with that said, I think this is another argument against the "keep Pelini" crowd. He only held 4 teams below their scoring avg. against others (one which was just barely under); and allowed 6 to score above, with 3 being significantly above.

I posted this without any intent for or against Pelini.

For the record, the (lack of) results speak for themselves and I am for a change just for the reason that it is hard to do any worse other than forcing tunrovers and 3rd/4th down defense. But 1st and 2nd down were so bad it didn't matter.

You have a point there. It assumes that you have a capable offense and special teams which other than inexperience at QB, LSU does have.

Embarrassing.

Can't blame individual players for all of it.

That miss state game was one of the worst defensive performances I’ve ever seen in tiger stadium. Especially after saying the d looked better then any point last year. Talk about a buzz kill

It's never just one person's fault. But when you see guys that have performed well in the past (Stevens, Hampton, Clark, Flott, Harris) look absolutely lost and awful, you have to look at what changed? Either the scheme didn't fit the skillset of the players? The players simply didn't understand the scheme? The players didn't trust the coaches? Or (likely) some combination of all three. The least likely explanation is that ALL of the players mentioned above significantly regressed simultaneously.

This also shows that the defense improved over the course of the year, which is indicative of good coaching. Not trying to say we don't need new coaches though

For all the praise Aranda gets on here, has anyone thought about the fact that our defense has been on the decline since he started at LSU?

The talent difference from last season to this season is dramatically different.

Aranda had Kristian Fulton, Jacoby Stevens, Kary Vincent Jr, Patrick Queen, Jacob Phillips, Grant Delpit, Stingley, etc yet still only could produce the #33 defense in the country. Compare that to what Pelini is working with. Aranda didnt exactly leave Pelini with a ton to work with. We didnt fill many positions with players better or even equal. You wonder why we're giving big plays up relative to last year? Some of that has to do with the fact that youre comparing Cordale Flott to Kristian Fulton. Yeah he's just not as good.

The ones who hate O and loved Aranda would say but attrition...something they scoff at as an excuse this year.
