Playoff committee ranking Alabama at #5. What does this mean?

Are they trying to give them a chance to get back in or is it their way of saying sorry you are out unless chaos ensues? What are the analyst saying?

It means they're the 5th best team.
Posted on 11/13/19 at 8:14 am to al_cajun
it means they don't think they're as good as the 4 teams ahead of them
Posted on 11/13/19 at 8:14 am to al_cajun
They won't be able to get in on their own.

Bama never drops as far as any other high-ranking team with a loss would drop. Bama privilege.

It means that when the Tigers beat UGA that Bama slides into the playoffs. Order restored. TV peeps

It means there are a hundred scenarios where bama doesn't make it in just by winning out. Too much football left to play for Big 10, Big 12, and PAC-12 teams.

it means they will be in.A sneaky way of keeping them in

It means the committee is more impressed with UGA's wins than Bama's and doesn't value "best loss" like Bama hoped for. It's a great thing for those that don't want Bama in.

Yep. It means quality wins > quality losses.

I don’t know if the rant is worse when LSU is playing poorly or if they’re in the title hunt. It’s like people tuned in for the first time in 8 years.

It means if LSU Wins out they will see bama again in the first round of CFP

It means SOS and actual wins means very little. They pass the eye test, but they should be lower.

Huh? How is UGA ahead of them then?

not if Oregon, Baylor, Minnesota, or Oklahoma win out

It means we are number one. Let’s focus on staying there and getting ourselves in the playoffs. Whomever else is there, we’ll deal with them then.
We have one of the best teams in our history, and probably THE most entertaining team in our history. Yet, all our fans can focus on is the team we just beat and what some committee thinks about them.

I believe it means that they are in the correct position, for now. There are a number of 0 or 1 loss teams that could jump them because they have chances to improve their resume. Alabama could finish the year without beating a single ranked team. If Baylor, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Utah, or Oregon win out, they could conceivably jump Alabama, although Minnesota winning out would probably knock OSU out of the top 4 and would be net neutral.

When Oregon runs the table, they jump Bama for the 4th spot.

If you don't want Alabama in the final Top 4 here's what I think you need to root for:
1) Auburn to beat Bama in the Iron Bowl- 2 loss Bama is out.
If Bama is to win out:
2) If Bama beats Auburn in the Iron Bowl you need Georgia to beat Auburn this weekend, giving Auburn their 3rd loss and dropping them in the polls into the mid-teens when Alabama plays them and beats them, making Alabama's best wins against a 4 loss Auburn and a 5 loss A&M (assuming A&M loses to UGA and us).
3) Oregon and Utah to keep winning and hope the committee takes a 1 loss PAC 10 Champion over a 1 loss Bama.
4) Baylor to win out (not very likely) and to hope the committee takes an unbeaten Big 12 champion over a 1 loss Bama.

The teams right behind Alabama have a higher probability of working themselves into the playoffs than Bama does right now. You really think a 12-1 PAC 12 Champion Oregon (on a 12 game winning streak) won't "jump" them for the last playoff spot?
Them being put at #5 indicates that if chalk prevails, that's where they'll end the season at - on the outside looking in and preparing for the Sugar Bowl.
