why do teams need both

If E is going to stay on as an offensive advisor, you don’t.

This.
But sometimes it's title inflation to justify a raise for an assistant that needs to be kept around.

Just as curious, why did we need a safety and CB coach?

To get Joe Burrow.

Because Aranda wanted him.

The Bill Busch hire was to appease Aranda to keep him from going to A&M.
To answer the OP you don’t need one but LSU didn’t invent the position. Passing game coordinators and running game coordinators are all over college football. In some ways it’s like being associate head coach. It comes with slightly more responsibilities as a position coach to justify paying them more money. I don’t have an issue with it. More than one mind coming up with a game plan isn’t a bad idea.

That wasn't the initial reason. Not sure why Corey can't handle all DB coaching duties.

Lots of schools have this. Some have a run game coordinator.

IMO we need an OC, a PGC, an RGC, and an Associate HC, along with all standard position coaches. They each need to be making upwards of $1.5 million to retain them. It’s the only way we can compete with Saban.

It was one of the perks to sway aranda from going to A&M. Busch might’ve been the best recruiter on the staff and was the sole reason burrow ended up here. He and Raymond didn’t get along from what I heard. Kinda glad Raymond is coaching the whole secondary again because safety play left me with more to desire...

they don't. It's for an OC that doesn't know what they're doing.

They are technically two different positions.
And they are very different
It’s still more of a luxery

Because the passing game is way more complex than it was 10 yrs ago or even 5 yrs ago. Brady used to spend every Monday looking at NFL scoring plays and implementing them into the offense. OC does not have time for that. That kind of effort is what makes you always a step ahead.
When you are running a 3man route with max protect it is not much to keep up with but running a 5 man route matrix and communicating that to the QB in between series is more than one mans brain will process efficiently.
Also if you watch the OC and PGC in the booth the analysts and the PGC are feeding the OC plays to call for down and distance. If you want to run HUNH you dont have time to look at the play sheet, watch the defense, and call adjustments.

It’s just what you do when you said you’d hire the best OC possible but instead promoted your TE coach who hadn’t called plays in decades.

Who is Alabama’s PGC?
Posted on 12/22/20 at 4:45 pm to SammyTiger
You can call them what you want. Bama has 5 Off coaches and 5 Def coaches with ST as a part of one of the Off coaches duties. Sark coaches from the sideline so I am not sure who is in the booth but I guarantee you with that monster analyst staff they have they have a bunch of people feedind Sark play info.
We have 5 Off and 4 Def with a full ST coach.
