Breaking down the Passes by SE

1. Completed screen to the RB for a 20 yard gain. Appeared to be a missed coverage by the LB's and the inability of the DL to identify it's a screen play.

2. Attempted deep middle ball overthrown and well covered by Vincent.

3. WR screen to the right covered well by Delpit. Great awareness and great tackle behind the line of scrimmage.

4. Pass attempt once again deep down the middle covered well by Vincent but a hands to the face penalty was called on Lawrence giving them a first down.

5. Pitch to the left reverse play where the receiver throws to Ehlinger for the 1st down. Play needed to be identified earlier and made by the LB.

6. 27 yard pass to the left sideline for a completion on Flott. Flott had great coverage and almost knocked the ball out as it was delivered. It was just a great backside throw.

7. Incomplete pass batted down by Lawrence but the pass appears to be going to the left side where Flott had good coverage and it would have been interesting to see if it could have been completed.

8. Incomplete pass scramble/run play where Ehlinger threw the ball away to bring up 4th down.

9. Incomplete pass to the RB in the flat where the RB dropped the ball. This is obviously a LB coverage. It appeared to be Phillips that dropped the ball on this play. Lb's are usually responsible for back's out of the backfield.

10. incomplete Pass across the middle right side of the field to a TE in the slot that appeared to be covered by Divinity. Not sure if this was a zone coverage but the TE got behind everyone and it was a poorly thrown ball by Ehlinger.

11. Completed pass for 6 yards beyond the LOS to a receiver in the slot. Delpit was over this guy and appeared to be pointing to the LB's for coverage as the receiver headed across the middle.

12. Completed pass to the TE in the slot right for the 1st down. Stephens was over this guy and appears to be playing way off. This was probably the LB's coverage due to where the receiver caught the ball. The LB, Divinity, didn't identify the flat coverage and get over in time. Tackle was made by stephens.

13. incomplete deep ball down the left sidelines covered by Stingley. This is the controversial call of a completing/incompletion/interception. I still believe it was an interception because Stingley clearly had possession over the WR and I don't believe the ball touched the ground. The view from the sideline camera shows the ball never touched the ground. It also should have been an offensive PI because the WR pushed off on stingley as the ball was approaching.

14. incomplete deep pass to the right. Man coverage by Fulton and well covered and slightly overthrown by Ehlinger.

15. Completed deep 3rd down throw to the WR down the right side for a TD where it appeared that Fulton misjudged the throw. He was in good position had he not stopped and stumbled looking for the ball.

16. Incomplete quick curl to the WR on the left well defended and timed break by Fulton for the pass breakup.

17. Incomplete pass to the left, once again well defended by Fulton but Jacob Phillips completely tackled his guy and a penalty was called. This didn't go down as an incompletion, due to the penalty, but was worth noting that it was a LB's miscue.

18. Completion across the middle to the slot receiver. Defense appears to be playing a middle zone coverage and the receiver got behind the LB's and in front of the safety. Vincent was lined up over this guy but playing back in a 2 deep zone coverage. I would say the divinity needed to drop back and play in that lane or a quicker recognition by the safety to break on the ball. Tackle was made by Delpit.

19. Completed pass to the back out of the backfield just behind the line of scrimmage. Tackle made by Phillips for just a short gain.

20. Drop back pass with great coverage and a sack by stephens.

21. Completed pass to the RB in the left flat- swing pass for a 8 yard gain. Appeared to be a soft coverage completion and should have been Stephen's man to cover or identify as his coverage responsibility.

22. incompletion with great pressure, Ehlinger avoiding the sack to throw the ball away down the field to the left sideline.

23. Pressure once again and a sack of Ehlinger. This is something we should have done more. We brought an extra LB with pressure and stunting Chaisson around up the middle for the sack.

24. Incomplete pass to the right with great pressure by divinity as Ehlinger tried to roll out.

25. completed swing pass to the RB to the right. This was Divinity's play to make. He appeared slow to read and didn't get over to assist in the tackle until the RB was 10 yards downfield and tackled. More recognition and effort was needed by Divinity on this play.

26. Incomplete deep pass to the right side covered well by Fulton in a man to man coverage.

27. Completed quick slant to the left. Tackle made by Vincent. A quicker read and break on the ball could have resulted in an incompletion. Deflection of the ball was almost made by Stephens dropping into the throwing lane.

28. Completed pass to the TE who came back across the line of scrimmage and was a check down option for Ehlinger who scrambled left and then right. TE's are usually covered by a safety. Delpit was the closest to the player as he fell to the ground on his own.

29. Incomplete deep pass down the left sideline back shoulder throw covered well by Stingley.

30. completed Pass to the slot receiver covered by Delpit and great recognition. Delpit was unable to secure the tackle and the receiver gained 10+ yards.

31. Completed pass to the TE in the slot covered by Divinity. No pressure on the QB allowed Ehlinger to survey the field and throw to soft coverage. Slow break by Divinity as the receiver ran across his face.

32. incomplete pass downfield to the left end zone to no one. Pressure was put on Ehlinger and there was probably miscommunication with his WR.

33. completed pass to the right on a deep sideline curl route against Fulton. Fulton got turned around and it was a great timing route by texas.

34. Completed WR/RB screen pass in the slot. Once again diagnosed well by Delpit with a missed tackle behind the line of scrimmage. This is the play were Delpit got rocked.

35. Completed pass to the WR to the left with Fulton on man coverage. WR was able to get inside position on Fulton as he broke on a crossing route to the middle.

36. Completed pass to the slot guy in a WR Screen off the line of scrimmage. Duvernay was big for them all night and obviously their best offensive player not named Ehlinger. This was on Clark as the OLB who was slow diagnosing the play. Also, Delpit has made this play at the LOS so it could have also been on the person playing safety at the time, which was Vincent. Tackle made 10 yards downfield.

37. Incomplete post corner route covered by Vincent. Lots of pressure on Ehlinger and an inaccurate throw. Good throw may have been a TD. Vincent had decent coverage but could have been a TD with a good throw.

38. Completed pass for a TD on a deep slant route covered by Harris. Great look off by Ehlinger to the outside guy to move Harris a little and then back to the middle. Great break by harris who almost deflected the ball but an even better throw and catch.

39. completed quick slant to the right, once again, to number 6. Coverage by Vincent who was playing off and slow to break once recognition was made on the play. 10+ yard gain.

40. Completed out route pass to number 6 in the slot to the right. Queen was in coverage and slow to recognize the out route and to break on the ball.

41. Completed swing pass to the RB out in the flat to the left. Queen's man and late to recognize and flow with the RB. Gain of 9+ yards.

42. Incomplete deep sideline pass out of bounds to the left. Well covered by Fulton.

43. complete pass for a TD by number 6 again on a 4th down play. The two slot receivers crossed and Vincent missed breaking on the ball and made a poor attempt at trying to tackle. They killed us in the Slot all night.

44. Deep pass to the Slot receiver to the right covered by Harris was incomplete but called pass interference and was a good call. He did grab the receiver. Offsetting calls had to repeat the play.

45. completed pass to the right on a pressure scramble by Ehlinger covered by Stephens for a deep out completion.

46. Completed crossing route at the line of Scrimmage by the WR out to the right. Divinity recognized the play and came up missed the tackle but a team tackle was made for a short loss.

47. completed pass to the slot receiver number 6. appeared to be playing a zone and the throw was made behind stephens and in front of Harris.

48. incomplete pass to the deep right that was called pass interference on Fulton. He was in great position and knocked the ball away. I thought this was a bad call as Fulton made minimal contact that looked incidental.

49. Incomplete pass deep to the right covered by Fulton. Great coverage.

50. completed pass to the RB for a check down covered and tackled well.

51. completed Deep pass to the right on Fulton. WR had inside position and went up and caught the ball. Poor positioning by Fulton resulted in this completion but he was right there and could have made a play.

52. completed Crossing play across the middle to the slot guy number 6. Tackle made by stephens for a short gain.

53. completed pass to the slot number 6 called back due to holding.

54. deep throw to the end zone where Ehlinger scrambled and Harris let the receiver get behind him and then proceeded to maul the receiver before the ball got there. Obvious PI call.

55. Completed pass for a TD down the middle in what appears to be a soft zone coverage. LB Queen didn't drop back into his zone and the throw was made between Delpit and Harris.

My take away after analysis of all the pass plays.

1. Fulton got picked on and gave up some yardage but he was in position to make pretty much all of those plays. The one quick out he was beat on and got turned around and the TD where he misjudge the ball were the two obvious flawed plays, otherwise, he didn't do that bad.

2. We were killed in the slot. This need to be addressed or teams will take advantage of what they seen texas do.

3. Other Than Delpit, Safety and LB's were slow to react to the WR behind the line screen play. If Delpit wasn't in coverage, that play went for a lot of yardage.

4. Divinity isn't great in coverage and may not be our best option at LB. He appears to be a better down on the line of scrimmage and rushing the passer.

5. Vincent didn't have that great of a game and missed a big tackle that went for 6 on a slot receiver slant. Looked like a poor effort.

6. We really need another safety next to Delpit. There is an obvious drop off in talent and Harris may not be the answer. I wonder if Brooks can play safety. I really wish Joseph hadn't transferred because He would of had his chance to play safety.

7. Stingley is legit and it was obvious that Texas realized how good he is and tried to steer clear of his side.

you could see this coming from a mile away. Tackle over to the boundary. They had us completely out leveraged on the field side. Great play design but we were completely fooled and thank heavens that guy whiffed

FWIW, In the stats we had 5 PB's. Stingley had 2, Fulton had 2, and Lawrence had one at the LOS.

Really excellent analysis! Agree with just about everything you said! It all starts up front... without penetration and pressure on the QB, offense will pass wildly!

Wish we had more post like this. Objective analysis than emotional outbursts.

It was not just the pass defense. Missed tackles, no pass rush, looking sluggish, and not stopping converted running backs were all bad. How many 3 and outs did the defense force?

So did Stingley give up any catches at all?

Something I didn’t realize until this morning while watching the replay, Stingley didn’t allow a catch and had zero penalties. Also had 2 pass deflections.

Dude is just different.

Clark needs more work over Divinity, better option IMO.

Phillips is good but also needs coverage work.

Marcel needs to get work in these smaller games, cause I think he's the answer next to Delpit.

Chaisson needs more stunt blitzes called for him...super speed and needs to work on breaking OT arms off of him. He will get held alot and not every call will be made, i.e. last night. Needs to get a nice swim move or something to get around.

Read through all that and take note of how many of those plays were on the linebackers. They were awful.

I legitimately thought the DBs were usually in great positions. UT just has some studs.

Don't think you can do that...he locked Johnson down damn near all game.

Old-Belichick tactic...take away their best player.

Linebackers did play poorly in coverage and reading a play and attacking it with explosiveness was lacking in everyone not named delpit. Delpit’s ability to diagnose a play and get there is something special to see.

No catches given up by stingley. The slot plays were working great and my guess is they kept going with what was working

Brooks is not a safety. Did y’all not see him come in for Chaisson?
