endowments are different than typical fund raising campaigns like forever lsu. endowment money is not spent, it is invested and a portion of the profits are spent and a portion reinvested to continually grow the endowment. i think the forever lsu campaign is different as portions of that are going to places like TAF

So how is endowment money raised? And are you sure that some of that money is going to TAF? I remember looking at some financial documents about TAF, and it doesn't look like they need very much money.

I think it was sometime in the 80's that we started one.

i'm not totally sure but i think most schools probably use some donation money and put some towards the endowment yearly. most colleges let you specify exactly where the money you are donating is being spent. and from there it grows on its own. when you're investing that much money even a 5% or 6% percent return is a lot of money.

yeah, i just looked and some of it is definitely going to TAF. it looks like the forever lsu money is being split up all over the place. looks like a good bit of it is going towards the schools endowment though

This is slightly disappointing. I imagine the only place in the school that isn't hurting for money is TAF. Perhaps I am wrong and they desperately need it.

it might all be going into the endowment and the profits once invested are what the site is talking about. it's hard to tell because it's fairly vague.

I, for one, would not support any endowment money going into athletics. With the amount of support that athletics gets at this university, you would have to think that they are for the most part self-sufficient. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of the matter can chime in with what they know about where the money goes.

I'm pretty sure LSU is one of the schools that is self-sustaining, meaning no endowment money goes to athletics. A few schools do this including SC and I believe LSU, but I'm not positive

damn, Texas is hung like a horse. both of my kids love lsu, but i was actually thinking if they didn't go to stanford, harvard, princeton, or yale, the next best thing would be texas.

(even though they'll get in-state tuition due to the fact that both parents went to lsu).

we'd have to bring in at least a dozen crystal balls home before we break the $10billion mark. i think harvard has a nut-lock on the endowment.

Well an LSU grad is one of the top ten inventors in the world, I forget his name at the moment, but he was featured in an LSU alumni magazine. We could hope he invents something really important, and gives LSU a bunch of money. Other than that, if we could get to a billion, it would do all right. A five percent return on a billion dollar endowment, (I am not sure if I am doing this right), would be something like fifty million dollars, which might cover any budget short falls that might occur.

Harvard has upwards of 10,000 endowments, if LSU could get half that number of donations, we would probably be sitting pretty. Now I say all this knowing nothing of how endowments work. I am just going by what is on this thread and wikipedia.

Plus UT and A&M have access to a state sponsored university fund with assets north of $30 bil. funded by state owned land and natural resources.
