80-78 over Kentucky. In those days, LSU vs Kentucky was on par nationally with Duke-North Carolina. LSU won 65-60 in Lexington and Kentucky won, 76-74 in overtime to win the regular season title. Kentucky was AP #2 and LSU was AP #5 for the SEC Tournament Title. Both teams were awarded One Seeds the following day in year two of seeding.

Here is the box score with quite a few "who's who" of that era. A freak snow storm that morning limited attendance to basically those who had hotel rooms across the street from the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center.

Wasn't our 1980 team basically the same core as the team in 1981 that made the Final Four, except we lost Rudy Macklin?

Considering the then, it is depressing to consider how little has been achieved as a basketball program.

We lost Scales but picked up Leonard Mitchell.

Also lost Jordy Hultberg who was a great shooter of the bench and Rick Mattick, a 7-footer off the bench.

The 1980 team is still my favorite all-time LSU BB team. 1981 is second.

Although I believe this was for the 1981 team, I think it's most of the same players....

You're right! Not sure what I was thinking, then.

Man, those teams were good.

One of my all-time favorite sports memories, I was there for the Finals in Birmingham...my sister let me tag along with her last minute and we flew in Saturday morning. I was just 14 years old at the time.

Scales went off on the Cats, Cookie Man totally intimidated Bowie. Only 8 assists on 33 made FG's though so...….:)

....and I think we lost Scales to "hardship". I am going from memory, but I think Scales was a junior and left a year early (which was very uncommon at the time).

That's correct. Think about how good that 1981 team would have been with Scales as a senior. We likely win it all even with Macklin's broken finger. Scales and Macklin complemented each other so well. When one was off, the other would score 30 points. He had a great game against DePaul that year when Macklin was injured on the first play of the game. He an Hultberg almost pulled out that game on the road against #1 DePaul. He also had a dominant game in that 1980 SEC Championship game. The fact that he laid an egg in the NBA makes it even more painful to think about what might have been in '81. Mitchell and Sims coming off the bench with an extra 6'9" starter that could grab the top of the backboard and could score 30 on any given night.

1980-1981 was my freshman year. If you didn't get in line two hours before they opened the gates, not tipoff, you probably weren't getting into the Assembly Center.

Astronaut, because he umps so high gets burned on reentry.

If he does not go hardship, we win the championship in '81.
