Trying to organize some old LSU photos, sorry for poor quality. I'm old man trying to use iPhone
Is this from 79 USC game?
Is this 4th down stop from 59 ole miss?
What year?

The bottom of the second pic should answer that question

He was asking about the play specifically

Thanks, I KNOW it's ole miss but was it the 4th down stop after 89 punt return that saved game?

The goal line stand play was a tackle by Cannon (#20) and Rabb (#12) of Ole Miss' QB Elmore (#19), so the participants are the same.
I would say 99% that's the play, because I've heard Cannon himself describe the play as Warren went low and he (Cannon) went high.

Top picture is of the USC game. That play is either the last play of the game or the one before last play of the game. LSU was throwing deep into the endzone in a jump ball situation. The LSU receiver is Lionel Wallis from Houma, who was 6'5" or 6'6".

The stripes could be USC, but I'm pretty sure that's an "M" on the side of the helmet. Best guess is - if that's from 1979 that it's Mississippi State.

NVM - I'm convinced that's Blair from the 1959 Halloween game.

#1 should be 1979 LSU vs USC
#2 Is the stop of Ole Miss in 1959
#3 Appears to be Ole Miss 1959-68, with it looking more like 1968 range. Should be easy to track down with #30 LSU and #22 Ole Miss, but my rosters are in a box right now.

Then that makes #51 Chip Banks.
This is Chip Banks from 1980 (Maybe USC changed their uniform, but something is going on with the helmet from the OP - doesn't look like the typical USC helmet device.)
It makes sense for it to be USC, as that was a big media covered game - it wasn't like today when there are thousands of pictures of every angle of every game. I couldn't even find an example of the MSU-LSU game from that year for comparison to confirm or deny my theory.

That's Johnny Musso (Alabama #22), so that narrows it down to 1968 through 1971 -
That's not Alabama. They don't have shoulder stripes on their jersey, and their helmet stripe is white and that one is clearly colored.

You're right - I triggered on Bama because of numerals only on the side. Hell, who did we play back then with just numerals on the side of the helmet?
Musso was bigger than that cat, too, now that I look more closely.

Exactly what I was thinking, but I'm just going on assumption since I was born in '73 and didn't do any research. Never seen Bama in anything but crimson and white, which that is clearly NOT (even in B&W).

Could be ole miss in the powder blue helmet.

Did they ever run just numerals with a dark stripe down the center (looks "black" in b&w, just FTR)?
I know Mississippi State ran stripes on the sleeves (sometimes) and 1 year, 1972, ran white helmets with a dark red stripe on the top with just numerals on the side. But, the picture above makes the stripe look a lot darker than the main uniform color - the MSU would have matched.
Maybe Baylor in the 1960s? They ran numerals with a darker stripe on top, but again, it would have matched the main uniform color.
ETA: For those interested based on this thread, there is a pretty decent resource-
The Helmet Project
... but it hasn't helped me crack it, yet. I'll be damned if I can't find an opponent from the 60s through late 70s (that picture "feels" 67 to 81, for whatever reason) that had numerals only on the helmet, with a single stripe that does not match either primary or secondary uniform color (very dark or probably black stripe, very light, probably white stripes on the shoulders).

The bottom pic is Rebel left halfback George Blair in the 1959 game. The middle pic is QB Doug Elmore in the same game.

I can't definitively answer any of your questions, but I sure hope you continue posting. I am thoroughly interested in LSU history and memorabilia, and your threads the last couple of days have been a lot of fun.
And I would love to have a copy of that picture of Cannon and Rabb.....regardless of the year!

I'm going to go ahead and agree with you. The 2 white stripes are consistent with Elmore's jersey from what was certainly the 1959 game and probably the goal line stand tackle.
Here is a '61 picture of Blair (#22):
Here is a commemorative helmet from that year (why they make it #60 for 1959 is sketchy), and it has the main color blue, white numerals and that orange (red?) stripe down the middle was the third color on the uniform. It comes out darker in b&w for whatever reason.

My whole lifetime it seems Ole Miss can't commit to which shade of blue they are: is it navy? Is it royal? Is is lighter? Does it matter?
It would drive a branding consultant batty!

Ole Miss claims their blue to be "Yale Blue"...whatever
The code for their blue is Blue 2767- COLOR LINK
But they've been all over the board historically on the exact shade of blue.

They have worn two shades of blue at the same time most of my life.
They also pay their players.....thanks for the confirmation, Laramy.
