I often hear and see how professional athletes who fail to win the "big one" have somewhat of a tarnished legacy.
I don't get why some can't seem to objectively look at two players and compare their individual abilities outside of what the team accomplished. In every measure Russell is/was the superior quarterback; Pitt beating WV shouldn't factor into the discussion.

He was without a doubt one of the greatest college football talents EVER. Now, what did he do with that talent as a collegian?
he was the best QB in CFB in his final season
that's not enough?

You are typical of "The Greatest" crowd. You can't make your case so call names.
Cheer up, practice starts next week and you guys can start comparing our new quarterbacks to JR.
I would rather compare them to champions but that's just me.
I'm not interested in who can run the fastest or throw the ball the longest distance, I'm interested in another LSU crystal trophy. Whomever of Lee, Hatch, Jordan, or Shepherd that can earn that trophy will be my next QB hero.

Are we talking greatest QB's or championship TEAMS?...plenty of decent QB's have had championship teams....don't get me wrong, I'll take a championship any day over a great QB, but the list goes on and on of great QB's who never won a championship in college. Exactly who IS the greatest QB to play at LSU? When that question is asked, people go back to the stats for the answers. Hodson, Jones, etc. are some of the replies, but those guys never won a NC. Flynn and Mauck never come up in those questions. Yet when who is the greater QB, Flynn or JR is asked, many point to the NC and say Flynn. It's pretty obvious when you're objective that JR was the better QB...2 coaching staffs, amazing stats, and the NFL draft proves that. Now give me the crystal any day, but head to head as a QB, there's really no comparison.
Signed- Dan Marino, John Elway, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Doug Flutie etc...
Best NC LSU QB: Warren Rabb 58
Best Overall QB: The Great JR/Bert Jones tie

so historically, you'd rather compare a QB to trent dilfer than dan marino?

wins = function of TEAM
you don't judge an individual based on the collection of teammates around him

no, the case has been made time and time again but people like you are either too stupid or too biased (racism) to be able to look at facts and actual on the field performance and come to the only logical conclusion

Agreed, but the bottom line is we'll be debating this every year till the end of time simply based on the fact that two very mediocre talent wise QB's on either side of him helped LSU win NC's.
Not aiming this at you but it almost seems like JR has a club of apologist who feel the need to argue over every bad receiver, bad call, or bad OC that he encountered while he was here.

I agree with this also but that still doesn't change the fact that individuals in team athletic sports are judged on whether they won the big one or not. This is even tougher for QB's as they're considered team leaders who motivate those around them to go the extra mile.

Ignorant or not, those folks seem to be the ones that write the checks. Obviously Al Davis saw JR's talent for more than just being a part of a NC team. However, if he doesn't "just win baby" he'll be looking for another job. And no, I don't think Al Davis is an idiot, I'd say he's done fairly well for himself.
