Now that the regular season is over: A comparison of Harris and Etling

Here are there games at LSU:
Harris
54% ----- 2,756 yards ---- 7.9 yds/attempt ---- 20tds ---- 10ints ---- 2/1 td/int ratio ---- 134 rating
10-5 as a starter
66.67% winning pct
Danny Etling
60% ---- 1906 yards ----- 7.9 yds/attempt ---- 9 tds----- 4 int ----- 2.25td/1 int ratio ----- 135 rating
6-3 as a starter
66.67% winning pct
So both qbs have near identical stats, while having identical win percentages.
I think the first thing the new OC is going to need to do, is have the balls and brains to make Scott or Brennan the starter, or be a guru that can make Etling or Harris better than they have been by a good margin

Etling was greatly helped out by throwing for 300+ yards against TAMU. Really the stats are even closer than they appear on here

a 54% completion percentage v/s a 60% is a huge difference

now include clueless timeouts and delay of game penalties
those matter too
those matter too

Harris got to play many more cupcakes than Etling. These stats aren't exactly apples to apples. And if you want o take out Etling's outlier, you must also do that for Harris.

Etling had not been playing poorly. If we start a freshmen QB next year we will truly be fricked. We need a experienced QB to be able to grasp a new offense and use his experience to cover up mistakes of not knowing the offense. Give me a senior Danny etling any day of the week and let Brennan sit and learn the new offense before he's just thrown into the fire

Yeah he had like 3 huge sideline bombs that involved I safe catches by our WRs
Etling doesn't have the strongest arm, but that's not the worst thing when you have a 1-on-1 situation with a big WR.
Harris really overthrows a lot.

Etling was improving all year. that makes a huge difference in future expectations. he also kept many drives alive with critical 3rd down passes or runs.

apparently not when it comes to wins vs losses

Yes, that factor of game management!

Forget the stats for a second. Does anyone dispute that the offense looks night and day different with Etling?
Etling just looks comfortable. I held my breath every time Harris dropped back to pass. If his main target isn't open he panics.

not really
we scored lots of points last year with Harris at times and looked awful at times
just like this year with Etling

How many cupcake games are included for Harris?
A real comparison would be Harris stats for SEC games only as I believe Etling only played in one non conference game versus Southern Miss. All his starts are against pretty solid competition.
The eye test is the best barometer here as the offense looks and played way better with Etling at the helm. Period.

It's not incorrect, Harris got all cupcakes last year, split one with Etling this year, and then Etling had the South Alabama game cancelled.

Ok, but we can take an even closer look at the loses. Etling did everything in his power to win the Auburn game and actually threw the would-be winning TD pass. And, the Florida loss came down to an inability to run it in. Etling's 4th down throw under pressure was the reason that we were even in the game at that point.

Those stats were also mostly compiled in the Les Miles offense which I don't think anyone would consider to be "QB friendly"
You could probably argue that Etiling's final two games were his best two games. He played well against UF. The coaching staff just continued the Les Miles approach of being terrified to throw in the redzone. He was very good against A&M.
I'd also like to see what Harris could do in a different offense. Les' offense never fit him.
Outside of Poccic, LSU is going to return a pretty solid offense (yes LF is gone, but I think Guice has shown he more than up to the task to replace him). That offense will be led by a Sr. QB regardless of if it's Harris or Etling. Why blow it up to start a guy with ZERO college experience?

The eye test tells me Etling is much better than Harris. It's not even comparable.
