What gives?

Joe Alleva sold the rights to fights to Sonic. Now all fights must occur at Sonic. It's in the fine print on your tickets.

In the 80's you could sneak a 5th of grain alcohol into the stadium unless you were stupid about it. My memories of being in the student section form 83-86 begin with the smell of bourbon. Who really cares about fights? Hell it was some of the funnest times I EVER had!!!!!

I haven't been in the student section in a long time now, but are people no longer sneaking in booze? Or is it just a larger effort to keep it out?

Or maybe (sadly) some sense of apathy has set in. There used to be some crazy bastard about 10 row behind me who was furious...every game. He was constantly chewing out a coach for something (From 56 rows up!). But now? Silence. He's a model citizen now. You sit there and it's as if the people around you don't even care that a game is going on. Maybe the passion is gone and along with it the anger that led to fights?

I'm not advocating for more fights. Just curious as to why something that was a very common occurrence has seemingly disappeared

I credit the Rant. It provides the outlet for getting all our angry energy out during the week before game day.

Are today's LSU fans just more civilized and well behaved?

NO

Are people drinking less at the tailgates?

NO

Are today's college guys just a bunch of pussies and openly bisexual?

PROBABLY SO

Are fans not staying long enough to get to prime fight time?

DEFINATELY NOT

Are people just not as angry anymore?

Or, is it that everyone is on their cell phones during any lull in the action so that there really isn't any opportunity for the hostilities to escalate?

My 2cents would be thatvtge fighting crowd has been priced out of Tiger Stadium. The only group left that would start fights is the students and they don't stay long enough to get on each other's nerves anyway.

the type of fans that were in there in the 80s and 90s are not the type of fans you have in there currently.

It’s because you are old and your old eyes can’t see the student section. Recently out of LSU. Had probably about 2 fights per year out of the years I was there

Your tone suggests that you're a perfect example of someone who would've never made it at LSU during the period referenced by this thread. You would've been the one getting his arse kicked in the student section.

I saw at least 3 or 4 in my section during the Russell Athletic Bowl last year. It was WVU vs. Miami so no surprise. Easily the two trashiest major fanbases in the country. Mountain trash vs. beach trash. It was a site to behold.

re: No more fights in the stands at Tiger Stadium?
Went to most of my games during mid-late 90's while a student.

After reading OP and replies, I had a few questions and comments.

1. Does anyone actually wish there were more fights at games? If so, what's your rationale? How does this enhance the experience?

2. What does being bisexual have to do with anything? That's just ignorant. Maybe the OP is pissed because they can potentially get twice the amount of tail by swinging both ways.

3. It's a football game. People are there to watch a football game. I'm happy to see anyone starting fight get tossed the hell out immediately. If you want to fight, do it somewhere else. Go start a LSU fight club, get loaded, get all that raging, hyper-masculinity out. Then, enjoy a big group hug with all that dude-sweat.

re: No more fights in the stands at Tiger Stadium?
I was hoping to see some second-hand accounts of some of my better days. The family and I have been in Sec 415 since way before it was "415". This is the SEZ 'upper". Fun times, back in the day. I can also attest to multiple fights each game. The late 80's, and 90's were fun. Things started changing in the early 00's. My personal favorites were a Friday rKansas game...I forget the year...two idiot LSU fans sitting behind me were acting stupid and left with numerous lumps on their heads. A TN game (the one where we lost, then won)was ridiculous. That game is why I mostly dislike TN fans now. Lets just say that a very large TN fan went on a short trip down several rows, and took out every seatback on the way. His big arse rolled.

In the mid 90's on up, I was typically home from Camp Lejeune. We would leave Camp Lejeune at 12PM on Friday (when we weren't deployed), drive straight through the night, tailgate all day Saturday, go to the game, then drive back to Camp Lejeune (987 miles) on Sunday. A good friend from the Marines grew up in Houma. He and I would ride together. Some of the fights in the stadium, and on the PG, weren't necessarily "Fair" but that they were fun...LOL!

Good times.
