NIL...maybe it won't ruin college sports?
Posted by FowlGuy on 9/12/22 at 4:12 pm1113
So when this started, supposedly it was going to ruin college sports making it unfair for smaller schools bc they wouldn’t have the support/boostes/sponsors to afford these players. The most expensive college signing class (A&M), took an L to App. Alabama ($) struggled with Texas (realize this is not the same comparison as above) but has had the money long before NIL. ND loss to Marshall. Money can’t buy a TEAM. This has been proven in Professional sports. Maybe we can squash that bug.

You may get ripped on, but there is truth to this post. Once you get money, there’s a lot more things pulling on you.

I think we will definitively know next season when these 5 stars have a chance to be with each other for a season, maybe two. I think there’s something to be said for player development and it will take time to manifest.
That being said, the guys who signed for money may decide to bail and we may never get to really see if it works.
All that being said, I think you are correct in your assessments.

Give it a 4-year cycle, cannot judge on one year freshman class when typically, the first-year players are in transition and very few shine in year one.
Eventually the wealthier schools will separate themselves even further
For me, it wasn’t about ruining the competitiveness of the sport, and I do think it will level the playing field somewhat or at least reshuffle the deck a bit.
The problem is losing the unique, school pride and amateur-sport aspects of college athletics.
It’s not that I don’t think people should be able to earn money, it’s that we used to be able to believe this sport wasn’t just about that.

All of those guys are still freshman, so their impact wont be felt until the next couple of years.

Kids that can be bought without a real thought or care where they play can also be bought again in the portal the next year. I’m not sure you want that type of kid to be the heart and soul of your team.
I don’t disagree, but I have to imagine that you will have a number of kids that wanted to be at X school but couldn’t pass up another offer. Or momma couldn’t.

I think it's way too early to tell.
I think the transfer portal is having a bigger impact, and actually helping the smaller schools more than the big schools.
Also, the Covid super-seniors are having a big impact.
App State quarterback Chase Brice is a 6th year super senior and was better than any QB on A&M's roster. He was at Clemson and then Duke, before App state.

Players have been bought for years. It’s finally legal. Which in a sense, can cause turmoil between players and the people paying. When egos and money mix, expect problems. I can side with the post above about it ruining tradition, but even the NCAA and some Universities have found a way to ruin that with scheduling. Used to love the Arkansas thanksgiving tradition.

^^ This... The transfer portals ability to distribute the talent to smaller schools was on full display this weekend. If a player doesn't feel he's going to see PT quickly then boom .. Portal to smaller schools and start

Bryce Young is making 7-figures. So is Quinn Ewers. And I’m sure many others.
That’s far different than before.

Go tell it on the plantation. They weren't getting paid at all.

NIL doesn't make the coaches coach harder, and the players play harder....it simply allows the higher rated high school players to negotiate more, all before they play one down of college ball.
It still sucks, period.
