New defensive package with Key, Thompson & Chaisson

All on the field at the same time:
LINK
Mentions only putting 1 defensive lineman down, basically in 3rd and long sets, and have Key, Chaisson, Thompson out there along with 2 other linebackers. Probably White and Alexander or Taylor.
Sounds like we could implement a 1-5-5 defense for the first time under Aranda. Seems like a smart idea to take a lineman off the field and add a speedier linebacker with the running threat Fitzgerald provides.

Got to be honest, I wish coach O didn't even mention the package and what DA had been working on. So what - we don't know what the name of the package is. We know it exists.

Who rushes on the inside though? All of them are speed rushers. You need power to get through the middle, even on a passing down. Chaisson and Thompson as 220lbs each ain't gonna cut it, and I don't want Key on the inside either. You're gonna need two tackles

Been waiting for these "Aranda Specials"!!
1 down, 7 on the line but all standing, 3 DL-3 Lb, 3 S-2 CB playing off.

Just read that. That much pass rushing talent and speed on the field is going to be chaos for offenses.

Chaisson is 240.

This is a package for 3rd and long. You don't need any down linemen if the back end is in zone.

Chaisson is 240, no idea who moves slightly inside but the idea is to confuse the OL on who is actually rushing. In a 1-5-5, 3 or 4 of the linebackers will line up basically right on the line, you maybe bring 2 or 3, or all 4. The 2 or 3 that are coming you wont know until the snap as the others drop back in coverage. It's not necessarily about overpowering an offensive lineman with a 230-240 pound linebacker but confusing them on who to block so 1 guy gets a free release basically.
Also, it's a 1-5-5, the idea is NOT to have more than 1 down lineman. It's a pass rush formation on obvious passing downs. They won't run it on 2nd and 3. It's like a 3rd and 7 and longer formation.

An addendum to tAranda rights.

Apparently you dont watch this team very closely.
CDA seldom has two tackles in pass rushing packages. And they get after the QB.
So...

Key and Thompson on stunts, White on delay blitzes, etc. just like you saw vs. BYU.
This defense doesn't use power to create pressure on passing downs. Just wants to confuse the OL to create open lanes and then send athletes through them before the OL can even react.
Do you even Dave Aranda bro?

That's why they put a big NT in there. He covers the very middle and the backers rush the edges and some in the middle as well. You flush the QB and have one waiting on either a delayed blitz or you spy the QB with White. LSU ran this type of front when we played Louisville and was so successful. We did it a whole bunch against BYU. The OLman can't keep up with these speedy guys so they either have to hold or we make the tackle in the backfield. If they pass, he's in a rush because all he sees is bodies flying all over, they stunt these guys, delay some, and drop back others. They might start in a drop back then send a safety down and send the LB who looked as though he was dropping, it creates real problems for the OL and QB. He hasn't really even gotten creative with it. Haven't really brought any DBs yet. That's coming and he makes them disguise it so well, that's what I like about it. The ones who look like they are coming initially usually drop back, and the ones that look like they are dropping back come on a delayed blitz. It's extremly hard, almost impossible to pick up.

I tried to bump the thread.

I probably wouldn't have noticed it as much on TV, but from where I sat in Tiger Stadium it was obvious that Chaisson was incredibly disruptive on the field last week. That guy is going to be special. Put him on the field with Key and the linemen will be falling over themselves to decide who gets beat by who.

There are, at least, two ways of looking at this.
1) The idea of the "surprise" is intriguing for us fans. But, professional coaches will see a thing work and start adjusting immediately. So, that "surprise" lasts for a short while. Execution becomes the only thing. The Bama defense (ugh...I know) isn't very "surprising" (meaning, they do the same things over again. Individual blitzers may surprise on a given play)...they are just excellent athletes executing at a high level. LSU has that kind of athlete
2) IF the opposing team knows of a wrinkle...they MAY spend a little time in the week working on it. Any time that the the opponent spends dealing with "outside influences" MIGHT take away time spent on perfecting their own game plan.
I think NEITHER is a big deal. Neither occurrence will swing the game, IMO

Chaisson does not look 240.

I seriously doubt that Miss St would have been surprised to see our best pass rushers on the field in a passing situation.
Getting your best players on the field isn't some great secret.
