“NCAA has issued a one-time blanket waiver, in FBS football, to exempt postseason participation from the limit of 4 contests a student-athlete may participate in w/o using a season of competition. The blanket waiver is applicable to FBS postseason gms that occur after Dec 15, 2022”

Looks like players that were planning on sitting out the bowl game to maintain redshirt status are now able to play. Thoughts?

Better late than never. Further confirmation that bowls are just an exhibition.

Probably influential schools need QBs due to opt outs.

It is totally necessary in this new era. Too many opt outs and transfers to not do this.

Why not just dump redshirts and give everyone 5 years of eligibility? I always thought it was a weird rule.

Nussmeier could have given himself a leg up on this past season had he played in the bowl game.

This rule makes sense...

I think it’s smart, and obviously a direct reaction to all the opt outs actually putting remaining players in a dangerous position numbers are wise.

And you’re putting the players, their parents, and coaches in an awkward position by asking them to burn their redshirt—that you’ve likely all planned and agreed to…just for a numbers and safety reason to survive the Cheezits Bowl.

And like LSU last year, and teams like Purdue this year, it’s even more awkward because the interim coach who would theoretically be the one asking the player to play, likely is not even going to be on that staff the day after the bowl. ***

***I just want to give a big shout out to Brad Davis for how he handled the bowl game last year. People HATED on Nuss for not playing in that game, and some still haven’t gotten over it, but if you look, there’s a couple of quotes from Davis saying he didn’t even give Nuss a choice. He said there was no way he was gonna put an 18-year-old kid in that position to potentially waste a year for 1 game. Cause as we see, that 5th year can come in quite handy with QBs. And taking the decision out of Nuss’’s hands was doing right by him and his future by giving him that extra year as an option. Even if he winds up transferring. Cause you never know. And Davis did that not knowing whether or not he’d have a job the next week or not. Major respect for how he handled the team and represented LSU leading up to the bowl. (I also think BK was in on that Nuss decision, and it was done with either his blessing or strong encouragement. It’s another year of a future option for him, too.)***

Hope we see Wiggins now. I saw he was practicing, so he’s at least healthy enough.

The downvotes were from people who thought the post was saying bowls shouldn’t count in a team’s W-L record.

So who, for LSU, is probably gonna play now that wouldn’t have? I think they were pretty intentional with their redshirt plans. Like Wiggins—I know he had an injury that affected him, but I’m pretty sure he played in exactly 4 games and was shut down. After watching that practice clip of him being a full-go, I think he’s probably 100% playing now since we need bodies at the end positions. Who else played exactly 4 games, but weren’t planning to play in the bowl, but might now?

Good move by the NCAA. The only slight gripe I'd have with it is the timing of the announcement. Seems like they should have announced something like this at the start of the year so all teams would be on the same page. As it is, some teams may have held players to only playing in 3 games so they could play in the bowl and retain their eligibility. Others that let similarly situated players play in 4 now get an extra game.
