NCAA BB offense vs defense

In terms of giving you the best chance to win the whole thing would you rather have a team that doesn’t average as much offensively but has a smothering defense or a team like LSU which has a top 10 offense but can’t stop anyone? Also do you think if LSU slowed down their pace the could play much better defensively? I personally don’t think we have certain pieces that are a must like a true pg and a true big rim protector.

This team offensively is built to travel. The offense is great without relying on threes and they rebound very well. If this team played just ok defense they would be one of the best teams in the country. The problem is they play atrocious defense.

This particular team with such little depth, I prefer the offense. I would worry about foul trouble if it was the other way around.

Good point. I don’t even think it’s a depth thing as much as it is a quality depth thing. Kentucky runs essentially a 7 man rotation but are dominant because they all buy in to defense and they have two massive bigs down low that can alter any drive. It helps that they basically all 5 stars. I think Wades time will come because of his recruiting prowess but he was hindered last year.

The past two seasons LSU's style of offense does travel well since it's predicated on crashing the offensive glass more than sharp shooting.
There is certainly merit to the criticism that Wade teaches his motion/inside screening offense much better than he teaches defense (not to mention what seems like differing degrees of effort plays).
However, some of that is simply that LSU often cleans up on the offensive glass with size mismatches that are also complete disadvantages on the defensive end.
It's not all about coaching when a Watford or Days grab tons of offensive boards over AU's 6-0 McCormick or Bama's 6-2 Shackleford but those players also go off driving and shooting 3 pointers on the other end.

You need balance between the two. That is, you can be a weaker in one aspect if you are really good in the other. That said, the data seems to indicate that while you still must be good offensively to win the title, you must be even better defensively.
FWIW, LSU is WELL within the range of elite offensively.
However,
Over the last 15 years or so over 90% of the teams who made the Four were AT LEAST in the top 30 of defensive efficiency. That includes Cindarellas such as Loyola-Chi South Carolina, George Mason. The only team that really bucked the system was VCU in 2011.
Last year Auburn was a really good offensive team. But they were also a top 40 defensive team entering the NCAAT.

Since the existence of KenPom's rankings in 2002, no team has won the national championship that has been ranked lower than 40th in adjusted offensive efficiency.
