Milazzo’s base path was established to the right of the bag well down the line.
The rule doesn’t say anything about an established base path.

The late slide was more egregious than being outside the bag. Even with contact the Duke player slid through the bag.

Really lame of them to overturn that. Replay center covering the umps arse type of situation. Was almost hoping for the Duke comeback just for the stir it would have caused.

Seeing that replay makes it look like he was inside a little. I think a better view would be needed to compare it to Milazzo, whose entire body was outside the path.

My guess is they don't overturn that if it wasn't to end someone's season.

Base path only concerns avoiding a tag. Rule clearly states that the runners entire body must go straight over the bag.

Well inside the bag?

Yeah that's not "straight into the bag" to me. It's looks like its "straight into the fielder"

The fielder is sup to be protected in that area.

Duke has choked about 4 years in a row now. Not even Gio could bring them to Omaha.

Third straight super where they've won the first game and lost the next two.

Its close, but when you slide, obviously one leg is gonna be pointing out, thats what we have here, one goes over the bag, the other is under pointing towards 3rd. Nothing wrong with that.

that's the worst possible angle for the still shot ever. Haha. If that's on the other side of the bag at that angle, it would look like he's sliding straight into the bag, or maybe even the outside.

It wasn’t an unnatural move by any means, but by the letter of the rule 8-4 (2) it was correct on the field.

ETA: Agree on the comment about the still shot above, it needs to be a frame or two later when his right knee makes contact with the bag. At that point it shows his right foot and left leg inside of it.

No but it talks about the baseline and direct path to base

Also

“ 4) The runner slashes or kicks the fielder with either leg; or”

I honestly dont see what you guys are seeing

Couple frames later

Right knee is hitting the inside of the bag. Both feet are inside the base and his rightfoot ends up making contact with he fielder in the no go zone. Easy call. Replay center are a bunch of pussies

Yea but his right arse cheek went over the bag. By the letter of the rule, everything from the waist down must go completely over the bag.

His right foot is underneath his other leg on the slide, that isnt intentional contact at all. That left foot, may or may not have gone over the bag, really hard to tell from that angle. The bigger travesty is them not having a camera behind first base

No, not everything must go over the bag, it has to stay in direct line with the bag. There are some wide bodied dudes who could never make that happen

It does have to go over the bag because the imaginary area where the fielder is protected begins directly on each side of the bag

It might not explicitly say “over the bag” but it’s implied because of the protected area

A proper feet first slide has the extended leg touching the bag first in the middle of the bag. His extended leg was nowhere near the bag and aimed at the fielder. It wasn’t egregious but the first call of interference was correct.

If you were watching the game they showed multiple angles, his extended leg was aimed well inside of the bag. Did not even attempt to touch it.

Ive watched every replay they have, there is no good view of it from behind first base. Also, the ump making the call isnt in a good spot to see where the runner is as far as the path goes either. Its close, he is slightly inside the bag, but it isnt crazy obvious
