for some reason I thought the pitcher kind of stopped on his way to cover the bag so the 1B suddenly had to try to beat out the runner

It was and in fairness, I wouldn't expect the first baseman to be prepared for that one like I was saying I would be at 3rd base. Way less decision making when playing 3rd.
