Seems redundant and that one of these should have come first...

would have been 4th at the Rio Olympics.

That speaks for itself.

ETA: why does he live here but compete for Sweden, his mother's country?

He's competing for Sweden now, I bet when it comes time for the Olympics he'll start competing for the US. Olympic eligibility is a bit different. He could technically alternate which country he represents every 4 years.

He'll compete for US eventually.

He wasn't good enough as a junior (I think like 15 years old) last Olympics to make the US team apparently, so he competed for Sweden.

He's plenty good enough now.

Easier path to the Olympic s/world championships. If he slips up and had a bad day as an American it could cost him a trip. If he has a bad day as a Swede at their trials/championships he’ll more than likely still clear what’s needed to qualify for the olympics/worlds.

The problem is there’s so much competition here. Say 3rd in the trials is 19 ft even. He should be able to clear that but it’s possible he has a bad day and can’t hit it. In Sweden that third spot is probably 18 or something similar he can hit easily on his worst days.

Fair enough, but I have to believe he will be at a point soon that he is the best in the world regardless of age. I think he'd be confident in US trials at that point.

He's an absolute freak of nature.

This is literally what happened to his dad. He cleared the same height as the third place guy at the 1996 Olympic Trials, but Greg needed three attempts whereas the other guy made it on his second jump. The other guy went to the Olympics instead of Greg.

Generals are always fighting the last battle, so he probably wants to make sure Mondo doesn't "have a bad day" at the 2020 US trials and miss out. I'm not even sure Sweden has trials - I think I read somewhere on here that Sweden just takes the three Swedish jumpers who've had the best jump in the last calendar year. So Mondo could have a great jump at a European meet nine months before the Olympics and be good to go.

So currently, the international governing body is not allowing any transfers of allegiance. Meaning Mondo will be representing Sweden indefinitely. Under the previous rules, if he wanted to represent the US, he would have to sit out 3 years from the last time he represented Sweden in international competition. That would mean the earliest he could represent the USA would be after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. I doubt he would elect to miss, at a minimum, the 2019 World Championships and the 2020 Olympics.

New rules regarding transfer of allegiance are being drafted, but they are likely to be more restrictive than the previous code.

Yeah, we’ll see what happens. They suspended any transfers of allegiance because countries like Bahrain, Qatar, and Turkey were paying athletes to become citizens and compete for them. That obviously violates the spirit of the rule. I suspect they would view a case like Mondo’s more favorably since he has legitimate ties to both the US and Sweden. We can hope that they come up with a rule that prevents countries from buying athletes but allows legitimate transfers.

It would make too much sense to say "if you have a parent from 2 different countries and are a citizen in each, you're allowed to compete for either one".

The oil sheikhs can't pay someone to change their parents' birth place.
