I don't think it's as much "right wing nut jobs" as it is ignorance to the sport. Track and field isn't king in the US like it is elsewhere. For a newcomer to the sport it can appear that he's "taking the easy route" or "being a traitor," but for someone who's been around it you know how delicate the qualifying situation is. Not to mention the money.

As young as he is, is it unreasonable that he could add 6" or so to that? I'm not familiar with the intricacies of the pole vaulting. Thanks

Not claiming to be an expert, so let me start with that. While age will bring muscle and strength, he has the risk of adding weight. However he would also gain more experience and wisdom which will translate to better craft and technique. Mondo has great strength and expert technique right now all compacted in a smaller frame with lighter weight. Basically, all this to say, the majority of pole vaulting is about technique and the transfer of energy. His best way to gain 6in. is to epitomize his technique performance.
