I know it’s been like this forever, but it hit me pretty hard last night just how inconvenient and distracting it is to hold the draft in the middle of the ncaa postseason. Does any other sport have anything comparable to this? Thoughts?

(I have been following college baseball for 20 years, but this has always rubbed me the wrong way)

NCAA doesn't want to move tournament dates and MLB doesn't want to screw with TV schedules.

Therefore, we have what we have.

The NCAA has continually lengthened the season into the draft time frame. It’s not up to MLB to change their dates because less than 1% of the eligible pool is still playing in the NCAA postseason.

True story...Warren Morris hit "The Walkoff" on June 8, 1996
The draft hasn't moved... the tournament has!

I’m guessing the change to Super Regional format pushed it back considerably.

MLB doesn't want to mess with short season minor leagues. They want these kids playing.

IIRC the draft used to be during super regional weekend, and guys were getting drafted in the middle of games. Doing it Monday-Wednesday has helped in that regard.

As you noted, the draft always occurred at this time of the year- used to be during the CWS.

The short and simple answer is that college baseball doesn't correspond to pro baseball, as far as seasons go. This is basically the only sport that doesn't roughly overlay. There's always going to be problems due to that.

There are only 16 teams still playing out of the approx. 300 Division I baseball programs.

Rob Manfort was on MLB Monday night and he expressed a desire to partner up with the colleges. This was one thing he said he wanted to address.

Now he may have been bsing but he seemed genuine.

So what? The 16 best teams in the sport. The NBA draft isn’t during the Sweet 16 every year. You think anyone involved in college basketball would be cool with their best players being so distracted?

I understand it’s “complicated,” but come on.

That’s a terrible comparison. The NBA and college basketball seasons have a lot of overlap and there is enough of a gap between NBA seasons to hold the draft at the completion of their playoffs.

You may not be aware, but the MLB season is pretty long, before even considering spring training and the playoffs, and crosses multiple academic years.

Why not have draft around All Star Break in July
The college season is over.
It would suck for recruiting but then you could even have MLB type combines for prospects after college and high school seasons.

Let me get this straight. If we are talking baseball, then the players getting drafted join the minor league team in the middle of the year anyways... you are telling me that the draft can’t wait 2 1/2 weeks?

It’s not a “terrible comparison.” If college baseball wants to be successful then the powers at be need to stop taking some of this shite. (Not to mention the 11.7 scholarships situation)

It’s awful - MLB needs to move the draft to right after the CWS. Doing it in the middle of the season is disrespectful to the athletes.

I’m telling you that the draft has always been in early June and it’s the NCAA that has lengthened the season to make the issue worse. And if you haven’t heard, the push from many coaches now is to start the season even later and play into July.

Is MLB supposed to take its marching orders from the NCAA every time they want to change something with their season?

If college baseball wants to be successful they would be wise to partner with MLB and cooperate, not make stupid demands.

The season starts later thanks to the big 10's commissioner.

Start later, end later.

You’re right about a partnership for sure. I think that these issues need to be addressed, but it seems like too many people are content with the status quo because college baseball doesn’t demand a certain share of the pie.

Obviously this isn’t a big issue for the casual fan so it may not ever be addressed.
