re: Miles: QB situation not settled

So, I browsed through 18 pages hoping to find that someone would mention something about the acquisition of Jarrett Lee, and I didn't.
A lot of people seem to think that JL is at LSU because he has the talent to be. But, wasn't he (along with Hatch) quick pickups in order to fix the emergency QB situation once RP starting having trouble; unlike JJ who went through the recruiting process?
Were we ever REALLY after Hatch and Lee as prospects because we thought they had SEC-caliber talent, or because we needed depth at the QB position, QUICK?

With the competitive talent and experience level at QB, Miles has never had a starting QB coming back without questions to be answered on the practice field.
I thought Russell pretty much entrenched himself as the starter when he was around. Miles claimed competition of course thru the whole spring, thought I think it was a smokescreen. He knew all along JR was the starter.

tojo: "nah uh! miles is serious about a real QB controversy! He has been for years!"

But wasn't JJ injured for the majority of his Senior year, and was still recovering from that injury when he got to LSU?
I have only followed recruiting since last year, and I remember that right after the RP situation, the names Hatch and Lee just kind of came out of nowhere (at least to average fans)...which led me to believe that nobody expected them to play for several years, or we had just picked them up.
FWIW, I think Hatch played better than Lee did ...although, at the same time, he shouldn't have been running around (his advantage over JL?) in the SEC quite so much, but I guess he learned that the hard way.

i seriously cannot see how this debate is going on
there is NOTHING that will convince JJ lovers that Lee stands a chance of winning the job unless he gets hurt between now and Fall
regardless of what miles says. regardless of what crowton says. regardless of what comparisons you provide to show how rebounds are pretty damn common. regardless of stats. IT DOESN'T MATTER!
if you think Lee can win the job back, it shows you have some sense. now use more of it and leave these debates alone
fwiw, imo

quote:In Miles' first season ('05), Russell was coming off a less-than stellar RS Freshman year, while Flynn was recovering from an injury. Between a new coach and some unknowns (at the time) at QB, I don't think it's a stretch to say that Miles might not have been certain who his starter would be before Fall camp. And in '06, Russell was coming off an injury (obviously not that severe, as we now know) and Flynn had looked outstanding against a top 10 team in the bowl game. Again, though Miles probably figured Russell was more likely to start, it would not surprise me to learn that he was genuinely uncertain going into spring practice, and possibly even going into the fall (though I seem to recall the indications were pretty solid by then that JR would be the man).

quote:This is the part that (amazingly) you simply do not seem to grasp. Who WAS the better QB is not the issue. The issue is who WILL BE the better QB when opening day rolls around. Now, either you understand enough that you know the worse player one year can become the better player the next year, or you don't. If you do, then there is no reason to disagree with people who say that Lee might earn the starting spot. If you don't, then there is no reason for you to do anything.
because a 2nd grader could see who the better QB was.

that was his junior year...he led Destrahan to the state title his senior year. Lee and JJ were fairly comparable recruits, Lee probably a little more celebrated.

I think most fans knew about Lee. Hatch was a walk-on invited by Crowton.

Your information is incredibly wrong. You do state you have been only following recruiting for 1 year, but you should at least do SOME research before posting.
Truth of the matter is, each year, position try-outs should be somewhat open. Good and Bad performance does not necessarily carry over from one year to another. That being said, an upstart or poor performer should have to CLEARLY beat out an incumbant starter in order to take over a 1st string roster spot.
For instance, Jarrett Lee would have to perform head and shoulders above Jordan jefferson in order to get the opening day nod next year. He would also have to continue at a high level of play to keep the starting position. Jordan, as last years incumbent, should get the benefit of the doubt, IMHO.
Russell Shepard is the WILD CARD!!!!
Either way, with more experience and more competition/talent, I am optimistic about our QB play for next year.
ETA: Edited to add Chris Garrett to the Wild CARD mix at QB.
