Mid season hot seat..guess who is #1 on the list
Posted by ForLSU56 on 10/13/21 at 7:04 am380
ESPN Mid season hot seat
The writer list
Oregon's Mario Cristoba
Penn State coach James Franklin
Oklahoma's Lincoln Riley
Texas A&M's Fisher
Kentucky's Mark Stoops
Ole Miss' Lane Kiffin
Mike Gundy's name has been connected to the LSU job before

LSU could soon be joining USC in the deep waters of the coaching market. On Saturday night, Ed Orgeron's team trailed 21-0 and 35-7 in a noncompetitive 42-21 loss at Kentucky. The game felt like a breaking point in the Coach O era.
quote:
Orgeron's downfall has been swift but not completely surprising. Even during LSU's national championship season, the two Joes -- quarterback Joe Burrow and offensive playcaller Joe Brady -- received more praise than the head man. When Burrow and Brady both left for the NFL, and defensive coordinator Dave Aranda bolted for Baylor, questions immediately surfaced about Orgeron's ability to keep the program at an elite level.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, LSU is one of only three teams in the AP Poll era (1936 to present) to go 9-7 or worse in the 16 games following a national title. TCU went 6-10 after winning the 1938 title, Auburn went 9-7 after the 2010 title and Minnesota went 9-7 after winning the 1941 title.
quote:
There has been significant roster turnover and other factors working against the Tigers, but the coaching assistance Orgeron needs to succeed clearly isn't there.
quote:
"I just don't see it getting better," a Power 5 administrator said. "Offensively, that was not a great hire. Defensively, that was not a great hire. I don't have trust in the coordinators to get better, and I certainly don't have trust in Ed Orgeron to lead and manage in crisis situations."
quote:
With respect to quality candidates like Louisiana's Billy Napier, Woodward is expected to swing bigger.
"It's got to pop for him," an FBS assistant coach in Louisiana told me.
Who would be the home runs for LSU?

I’d take all on that list with Fisher being my last choice.

90% of his list is on hires, but none jump out and “pop”
Lincoln Riley and James Franklin are it

What an indictment on dipshit Ed

What about Brett Venables? He's a proven Defensive guy, makes 2.5mil. Would he not fit the bill if he could bring in a good Offensive coach?

I don't know his full story, but seems like he would have jumped to a head job a while ago if he was going to do it.

0% chance Riley leaves OU for lsu
He turned down an interview with the Cowboys 2 years ago. He has it made and is very close with the Stoops family

Mark Stoops is intriguing. I have no idea how he would do at LSU. At UK he’s never really had a ton of pressure on him. His defenses are always good and in 2019 he went 8-5 without a QB in the SEC. He squeezes everything out of his roster, done well in the portal and recruited well in his area. He made a great hire to improve their passing game. And hopefully he could bring over his compliance dept…

I just want to see because I know he will field an offense every year and a QB.

Dammit JP lol
Using the baseball search as the most recent barometer, I wouldn't be surprised if Woodward doesn't (or hasn't already) reached out to Bob Stoops and Chris Petersen. Both have long records of success and are available now without having to battle another school. They could come in almost immediately after this season ends and get rolling. Unless he just really, really, misses coaching, I think Petersen is done (or at minimum, doesn't want to deal with the insane requirements of being a SEC coach). Stoops might listen.
Of the writer's list, Franklin and Kiffin are probably the only two who would both listen to a conversation and who LSU may want. Franklin is a PA guy. But there also appears to be a cap on how much success he can have at PSU...really good, but not quite championship level. History says LSU could provide that breakthrough opportunity...and quickly.
To me, Kiffin has the potential to be the next Steve Spurrier. Creative play-caller with the ego and arrogance to piss off the rest of the SEC. In a world as competitive as the SEC, you better have a sense of ego to compete. At Ole Miss you can have the ego...but the program can only get you so far. LSU can make him a king of CFB (just like it did for prior average HCs...Saban, Miles, Orgeron). LSU would be the most hated program in the SEC...which I would LOVE. Of course (1) would Kiffin leave a relatively low expectation situation at OM? and (2) he has his own past issues that give pause to anyone hiring him.

I see 1 winable game left on our schedule. With all our injuries our record looks bleak. If he could win just 2 games from Fla, Ark, Ole Miss, or A&M, I could almost call it success. It would show that he can rally unremarkable bench warmers to rise to the cause. Not counting ULM, that is my wish. Just 2.

The dude can coach and manage a roster, however his lack of an offense worries me. I know he’s tried to modernize it, but really hasn’t been able too at Kentucky.
