LSU comes into this game 2-1 on the season after a 75-65 over a decent Nicholls St team over the weekend along with a 88-79 win over BGSU and a 84-82 loss @ VCU earlier this season. Once again the Tigers struggled mightily with pressure and turned the ball over 24 times. LSU has now turned the ball over 67 times in 3 games with 26 turnovers against VCU and 24 against Nicholls. Kenpom had us as a 21 point favorite over Nicholls, but we only won by 10 due to way too many turnovers and not hitting our 3's.
UMBC is 4-0 on the season but 3 wins are over Non Division-1 teams Valley Forge, St. Mary's (MD) & Georgian Court. Their lone Division 1 win was @ Florida Gulf Coast 65-61. UMBC finished last year 21-13, 11-5 in the America East. They lost to Vermont in the conference title game to miss the NCAA tournament. They are best known for knocking Virginia off in the NCAAT as the first ever 16 to take out a 1 seed.
UMBC I have not got to watch and film on, and it's hard to take their stats seriously since 3/4 games are against non Division I teams, but bear with me here...First off, their starting PG is only 5'2, 150 pounds and that's not a typo. He is a foot shorter than our guards are.
UMBC projected starters
C (6'9, 220) JR. Daniel Akin
PF (6'10, 210) JR. Brandon Horvath
SF (6'6, 180) SO. Keondre Kennedy
SG (6'3, 165) SO. L.J. Owens
PG (5'2, 160) JR. Darnell Rogers
Daniel Akin is a returning starter from last year's team whose season was cut a bit short. He is a true center type who not take any shots from outside. He averaged about 7 points and 8 boards in 26 minutes a gamer last season. He worked hard on the offensive glass with 3.3 OREB a game. Akin had a 13.8 PER last season.
Brandon Horvath was their 6th man last year and they confidently list him as a guard/forward. I'll call him a stretch 4 at 6'10, 210. He takes a few 3's a game and last year in 23 minutes a game averaged 9 points and 4 boards a game. Combined with Akin UMBC's front court presents a height challenge for our front court. He had a 17.5 PER last season.
Keondre Kennedy is a guess here because since game 1 starter Ricky Council who has been out the last 3 it's been a revolving door who is the 5th starter for UMBC. Kennedy comes to UMBC via JUCO and is a 3 to play 3 guy, hence why he's a sophomore. Obviously has good length at 6'6, 180 and seems to be a solid all around player with 8 points, 5 boards and over 2 assists a game this season. He has taken a little more 3's than 2's buit hasn't hit them at a high rate at 28.6%.
L.J. Owens is a transfer from William and Mary where he averaged 7 points last season. He is their 3 point specialist taking 6 a game from there this season so far and hitting a lot of them (37.5%).
Darnell Rogers is another JUCO transfer who is absolutely diminutive in size at a LISTED 5'2. Naturally he's a PG at that size, but he's not the best ball handler necessarily with 5.3 assists to 3.3 turnovers a game. Naturally, he's going to take more 3's than 2's as him driving to the hoop is a dangerous endeavor for a guy who is a foot to foot and a half shorter than everyone on the floor, but he still absolutely will do it and is completely fearless. He is hitting 50% of his 3's early on this season which is crazy good and is a unspeakable 55.6% from 2 which you would never expect from a 5'2 guard. This guy will be fun to watch. He is believed to be the smallest scholarship player in Division 1 basketball history. JUCO film on him, WORTH THE WATCH. This is a straight little person making average size basketball players look bad.
UMBC top bench players
SF (6'5, 235) SR. Arkel Lamar
C (6'8, 240) JR. Dimitrije Spasojevic
PF (6'7, 205) FR. Nathan Johnson
SF (6'5, 210) SO. Jack Schwietz
PG (6'3, 225) SO. R.J. Eytle-Rock
Lamar is a returning starter and may start this game, but his first action this year was last game. A thick SF, he can do multiple things for UMBC. Spasojevic is a big body they rotate in for their bigs who does not shoot any 3's, he comes to UMBC via transfer from East Carolina. Johnson has seen decent action for UMBC as a freshman as kind of stretch 4 or 3. Schwietz can be a ball handler for UMBC and do a lot of different roles overall. Eytle-Rock is a thick guard who can handle the ball and was a starter last year, but it seems Darnell Rogers took over for him this year and they like him more off the bench now.
Hard to really pinpoint this UMBC team with so much of their season against vastly outmatched non Division-1 teams. Against FGCU they did not shoot it well overall (35%) or from 3 (29%). They did grab 14 offensive rebounds though and held FGCU to only 30% from the floor. They've held every team they've played to under 39% from the floor this season.
Projected LSU Starting 5
PF (6'9, 235) FR. Trendon Watford - #2
PF (6'6, 240) SO. Darius Days - #0
SF (6'5, 200) JR Charles Manning Jr. - #11
SG (6'4, 205) SR. Skylar Mays - #4
PG (6'4, 205) SO. Javonte Smart - #1
Main rotational players
PF (6'6, 230) SO. Emmitt Williams - #5
SF (6'5, 210) SR. Marlon Taylor - #14 (Unlikely to be available)
SF (6'5, 225) rFR. Aundre Hyatt - #15
PG (6'2, 190) FR. James Bishop - #10

I saw that Rodgers kid play in the eybl a couple years back in Hampton, VA. That son of a gun can play. Being so short, he might have trouble against our tall guards, but he will shock people tomorrow night with some unbelievable plays.

Had LSU been able to make 3's it probably would have been a 15 point win vs. what has turned out to be (early on) a pretty good NSU team.
The defense for LSU has been a bit odd in that teams have been able to shoot it really well in the 1st half and awful in the 2nd. You'd like to see them play a little better in the first half (even if it means teams shoot a little better in the 2nd). The overall defensive efficiency number still isn't good. But at least they have shown the ability to lock things down after playing poorly for a half.
The turnovers have been the biggest issue. They are DEAD LAST (out of 353 teams) in TO's per game and are turning the ball over on nearly 30% of their possessions! That they are only 3 points away from being undefeated is a minor miracle at this point and just shows how good of individual scorers this team has.
IMO, this team is not built to play as "fast" as they are playing now. You could do that with Waters because he could play under control in an uptempo. Smart and/or Mays are your primary ball handlers and they are more "scorer" than "facilitator". Mays was much better vs. Nicholls in that dept., but Smart again had 7 TO's. Hopefully he can get that more under control tomorrow. Watford is still somewhat of a turnover machine himself, but so was Naz early. I think he will become more comfortable as the season goes on.
They should beat UMBC easily. Then, they get another BIG opportunity on Friday vs. Utah St. They let one slip AT VCU. It would be nice to pick up one really good win and probably a decent win (vs. Rhode Island) in Jamaica. But they can't do it having to beat the opponent AND themselves

It is like with Tremont gone, the sharks have been unleashed on LSU's guards. Nobody dared press LSU the last 2 years.
Smart/Mays and crew will be fine. This is quite an adjustment for both of them not having Tremont there to be a one-man press-break. They are good enough to work through it, but we all have to be patient enough to wait it out. They have 4 months to figure it out. I have faith.

You can just tell Javonte is overthinking every move he makes on offense right now. He's predetermining passes instead of reacting to what the defense is giving him. He'll come around, but it might take him getting placed on the second unit when Marlon gets back for a game or two to help slow the game down for him like we did Tremont last year. It's still early though.
Also, Days is an absolute stud and definite NBA prospect. I held my breath when he was down after leaping over the bench Saturday. Glad he's ok.

It will be WAY too late if it takes 4 months to figure it out. At most, they need to get the TO issue under control before the start of conf. play. LSU plays a pretty good OOC schedule with teams far better than Nicholls who are capable of stealing a game from LSU if they turn it over 23x per game. You don't want to waste an opportunity to build your resume before SEC play starts...where LSU is going to sneak up on no one this year.

Really encourage by Cooper's 0-0-0 stat line last game..... lol
All jokes aside hopefully we can get it together and get out to early leads against some of these lower skilled teams, UMBC is decent sure but Bishop and Coop really need to get some in game experience.

You are in a hotbed for great basketball talent (and sports talent, in general). I used to live in Norfolk and was able to see Percy Harvin and Kam Chancellor play.
UMBC is 4-0 but must not be very good because LSU is -17 last time I checked.

Under .500 in SEC play this year. Book it.

UMBC has a very, very, talented team. We will have to play extremely, extremely well to win.

Its like night and day without Waters. This team is hard to watch.
